How, nothings changed. If it was a slippery slope. It was years and years ago. This is nothing new.

It's time to write to your MP long before anything such as opt-out becomes law. Somebody has to make a stand against the tide of legislation rushed through to either "protect us from terrorists" or "protect the children"

What about my right to an uncensored (within reason - see earlier posts about IWF) Internet? Why is my right lesser than somebody who has children yet cannot take responsibility to raise them but can be very vocal to MP's who are keen to get votes?

Yes it is a good tool for responsible parents and as long as it remains optional and opt-in I have no issues. What will probably happen is feckless parents will assume this counts as being responsible and will take no extra steps to make sure little Billy isn't up to no good on the PC in his room.

People are forgetting how politics works here.

Gov spread rumours about making access to porn an opt out option so customers have to phone up and say I want to opt out and be available to see porn. Big feeling of disquiet in the country (everyone knows what the internet is for) government after going quiet for a couple of months comes back and says, "after careful consideration......." and the option now becomes and opt in to use the filter. Gov takes plaudits for taking a balanced view to content blocking, looks good in the papers, looks good as they are protecting the "rights" of adults.

Load of rubbish in this case. It's a very good way for parents. Anything you can put on a computer to block a child can unblock. A child cannot however unblock an ISP based filter.

It's total optional and there isn't a downside to it at all.

They can just use a proxy, which is very common with schoolkids.

AFAIK it's illegal to show someone < 18 porn. Where as game and movie age guides are just that; guides.

Already been covered many times over. It's an extra tool, not fool proof. But a lot harder and if combined with software and supervision. Makes life very hard.

How is the technology working anyway, I guess that it using DNS which is 10x easier to get around than a proxy.
ISP's will probably start chucking in free VPN's for their packages due to the amount of red tape they are getting.

This kind of thing is passing the puck to your ISP, frankly it's like asking your mail man to moderate the letters you receive.
It should be the parents responsibility, there is such a large resource of free software at no extra cost than can do this job. Maybe the ISP's could just send out crap loads of DVD's with software that anyone can install.

Opt-out on mobile data really winds me up. I'm an adult if I want porn delivered to my iPad I shouldn't need to telephone a Call Centre monkey and get a credit check done.

Yes damn people for being individuals and having a choice of what turns them on! How very dare they.

There are types of porn that are not extreme that I don't like. You know what? I don't watch them. I may like to watch a bit of BDSM and that's my choice. If you don't like it then don't watch it, it's not like the stuff just jumps down Google onto your screen unlike what the mainstream media and Government would have you think.

The "won't somebody think of the children" is one of the most dangerous phrases and most missed ones and should never be the basis for knee-jerk laws.

I have always laughed at how the same media companies who complain about over sexualisation of children, have nude pictures on page three.
I can't take these save the children arguments from newspapers seriously when if you turn over the page you get a large set of assets right in front of you.
