Battlefield 3 GPU worry’s….Q6600 @3Ghz

Hardly, you stated that, "Newer faster architecture will obviously influence new games today to run a lot better and a 5 year old counterpart."

Bulldozer is new, its not even actually out for retail, but it isn't really any better than its predecessor.

/\ Your second post just further justifies my point?

Im stuck with a similar problem. My Q6600 @ 3.6 is struggling with BF3 @ 2560x1400 using 6870 CF.

I'm not sure whether to upgrade my CPU to 2500K, 6870 CF to 6950's/6970's CF or both. Don't think I'm willing to splash out on both just for BF3.

The point here is, the 2500k outperforms the Q6600 by a huge margin, therefore it's newer architecture is better than it's older brother, no?

Of course the 2500k destroys the Q6600, but not in BF3, the Alpha/Beta at least. The benchmarks have proved that. The game is very very GPU dependant and doesn't rely much on the CPU, other than it needing a Quad core.

You said that "Newer faster architecture will obviously influence new games today to run a lot better and a 5 year old counterpart." This statement isn't true. I gave Bulldozer as the example that contradicts your statement.

I would say go for the 2500k, it's simply fantastic for games, and in a year or two when it starts struggling, you can bump up the speed easily to at least 4.6 GHz

6950's would be a good option though, but I would start with the CPU.

Apologies, i meant older brother, not counterpart

Pretty sure for that res the lack of VRAM is a bigger issue than the Q6600 at 3.6GHz. You want better performance/frame rate on your CF6870 at that res? You will have to keep the AA OFF.

Agreed. BF3 seems to lap up the VRAM, again hopefully the final version will optimise this. 1Gb VRAM for that resolution isn't enough and will cause slowdowns as the game tries to stream the textures etc in.
