My gf managed to drop her ipod today and broke the glass

I've taken iPods and phones apart before, but wondering if it's worth trying to fix or not?

I've seen an LCD & Digitizer on evilbay for about £30, but as a non-genuine part I doubt it will be of great quality.

Does anyone know where to get a genuine replacement for a good price? Also is it possible to change the glass on it's own?

I got one off eBay and the quality was actually pretty good. It was a fair bit more expensive than that mind you - about £40-45 IIRC.

They are a bit awkward to fit though, and no you can't just replace the glass, it is bonded to the LCD.

Very highly detailed instructions here... http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/...4th-Generation-Front-Panel-Replacement/3639/1

EDIT - wow!! They've fairly dropped in price since I fitted one. Seems like they can be picked up from £20 now even from top rated sellers in the UK

Thanks for the reply. I was put off by the ebay ones as I got a screen for my old blackberry and was far from impressed.

I thought the screen may be bonded on but I wasn't sure. It might be worth a go then, haven't got much to lose really!

Not if it's only £20 you don't!!

Once you remove the old screen, you can plug the new one in before installing it, and if it's not good enough, return it and get another one ;)

EDIT - I would say the screen I got was about 80% as good as the original, so not too bad to be fair.

Cool, what I like to hear :)

Just won this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110758112175?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

So I'll see how it goes. She's already cut her finger on it and she loves her music so I can't just leave it :)

Looks perfect, and he advertises it to have zero dead pixels, so you should have no hassle returning it if there's any issues...

Brand new & high-quality LCD
Quality controlled and tested
100% working without dead pixels
Ideal LCD replacement part

EDIT - make sure you have the tools to carry out the work. All you really need are the little plastic ones mentioned here... http://www.ifixit.com/Tools/Plastic...ired_items&utm_term=ipod_touch_4th_generation

...I am sure you'll get them on eBay if you don't already have them.

Indeed. Thanks for your help, I will report back when it arrives! :)

Yes, please do, and give me a shout if you need any help. Just take your time and don't try to force it, some of the little ribbon cables are very delicate. Follow the instructions I linked before to the letter and you'll be fine :)

The screen arrived this morning, looks good to me.

I'll have a go at it tonight if she has it with her when I see her later :) Watched a couple of vids and it doesn't look too bad to do at all really.

Looks great!

And tbh it's not that dificult at all. Just make sure to get it nice and warm and slide the plastic spade tool all the way around until it starts to lift, then be careful when removing the screen. IIRC you remove it from the bottom first, lifting at an angle (leaving the top as is) and then carefully remove the cables.

Ignore the vids though and follow the iFixit link I gave you - it's great ;)

Hasn't gone well, the cable that plugs in behind for the screen tore as I was putting it back together. So very angry. Plugged the screen in and it looks perfect, no touch though :(

Can't even back it up now as it has a passcode on it!

Oh man, sorry to hear that! That's what I was saying about the cables being very delicate.

Is the cable you damaged attached to the screen, or the iPod? I'm sure you can get a replacement with a little luck.

EDIT - ah, you say no touch, so I take it you damaged the cable from the new screen then? Bummer :(

Yeah I did, I did it while trying to get the other connectors back on the other side. I have sent the guy a message to see if I can return it, but I'll probably end up having to buy another screen for it!

Picked up the 2nd screen today, all fitted and working. Camera and WiFi don't work though :( I am NOT taking it apart again so she'll have to make do. I may buy her a new one for xmas! At least it works for music.

Oh dear :( Sorry to hear that, sounds like you must have dislodged a cable or something when you were working in there. It is very fiddly work, although not half as fiddly as my iPhone 4 that I had to strip yesterday to replace the home button

yes it's stupidly fiddly! nevermind, it's the music she cares about the most so she'll be happy :) the screen quality is excellent too :)
