Everyone loves a good rumour mill :p

Looks likely that a new full frame Canon camera is coming on Tuesday 18th. Being solidly reported on all the rumour sites. Pinch of salt as always but spec estimates:

16-18mp
Full Frame
ISO 51,200
12-14 FPS
61 AF points
Dual Digic V

Seems like a consolidation of the 1D and 1Ds lines as has been reported for a while and I'd expect some new video features.

Anyone excited or bothered in the slightest? I always find imaginary products are much better than the real thing!

1Ds ?

FF has the denoted S.

I thought the s meant more like studio (as in the s denotes a high resolution body). The 5D has no s.

These specs look like a high-speed version. Canon probably decided to end their line of 1.3x crop cameras because it doesn't make any sense. You still have to have FF lenses so which give a FF sensor with today's higher MP counts and then either let people crop in post or provide built in high speed crop modes (1.g., user selectable 1.2,1.3,1.4 and 1.5 crop modes).

Doubt they'll consolidate the lines, they go after different markets. If Nikon are going to continue with the D3/D3X route I doubt Canon will stop with the D/Ds route. If this is the replacement for the 1Ds3 there will be a lot of confused faces if the resolution does actually decrease.

For th 1D, the S has always been FF where the 1.3 cropped doesn't have the S.

That maybe so but that doesn't mean the s means FF and the lack of s means 1.3x crop. I thought it was just to differentiate the 2 cameras for different purposes, the s for high res work, the non-s for high speed.

Canon may move to having 2 FF cameras like Nikon with the D3 and D3x (in Nikon terminology, the x stands for high resolution, and traditionally an h was used for high speed, the D3 is really a D3h. With Nikon an s simply means second version/upgrade)

I don't think S has ever denoted full frame, the 1Ds line just has been full frame.

I think the 1D V will be the full frame super fast pro body and then the 5D III will be the super high resolution body. I would guess the 5D II has outsold the 1Ds III over the past 2 years by an enormous factor because if image detail and resolution is what you're after then the 5D does exactly that for a third of the price. If you want a super high speed sports camera you still need a 1D anyway so I can see them getting rid of the 1Ds line.

Now this I could definitely see happening. The 5D2 is an insanely popular studio camera (and to be honest just camera in general) for endless working photographers here in London. If it's not coming off a Phase back it's almost certainly coming off a 5D2. Instead of buying a 1Ds3 people were just buying 2 5D2's instead, the only part of the camera they really needed was the sensor/resolution, the rest of the features (of the 1 series) are largely redundant. Especially things like the auto focus, where most are still used to focusing with medium format cameras, compared to which even the 5D2 is amazing.

There are still plenty of people for which the 1DsMKIII appealed to. The 5DMKII was a great studio camera due to the sensor but it certainly is not a pro camera with pro features such as in-built vertical grip, ultimate build quality, weather sealing or versatile AF for things like wildlife photography. The 5DMKII just doesn't stand up to the rigors of say exploration photography or true landscape photography taking the camera into wild environments.

The Nikon D700 didn't undermine D3/s sales for exactly these reasons, pros still opted for a the pro body despite all the internals being identical in the D700 and the D700 body already being built like a tank and weather sealed. It looks like Nikon will continue their high-speed camera, their high res camera and an entry level prosumer FF D800 which looks like it may be based on the high res camera.

I very much doubt if Canon will drop their 1Ds line of high resolution tanks. If they do then thousands will be buying a Nikon D4x!

The Reason the 1DMK5 is going to be full frame and the 1.3x crop sensor dropped because 1.3x crop is stupid as it still requires FF lenses which are then wasted and it is much better to allow the user to select the crop, either in post or in camera giving the option to increase shutter rates and buffer depth. Furthermore Canon will need to move to FF to catch up with Nikon, The D3s simply outclasses the 1DMKIV for low light work and Im sure the D4 will up the game. Given Nikon's expertise in low-noise high ISO camera I doubt Canon can keep up on a smaller form factor.
