I don't usually bother with social networking sites, but without Facebook, I'd have little contact with some friends of mine, so I need one. Simple. My best friend only uses Facebook, and he works some odd hours so we only get time to meet up a couple of times a month, so it's useful for keeping in touch. There's a nice girl I'm interested in, and she prefers to send messages from Facebook on her phone instead of texting. Another of my friends lives in Portugal. Another in New York.
It's just easier to have them all in the one place. People can message me, and I can pick it up and reply whenever I want. If you use Facebook for its intended purpose, i.e., as a social networking site for keeping in touch with friends, instead of accepting all and sundry onto your friends list, you will get less of these useless updates/billions of pictures from egocentric people. Less is more
