Two-year-old girl in China run over by two vehicles, then ignored by more than a dozen people

If law has set a precedent that humane behaviour will be punished don't be surprised when humane behaviour is suppressed.

What I don't understand is how all of those van drivers can just drive over her?

From the van driver in link in OP

If she is dead, I may pay only about 20,000 yuan ($3,125). But if she is injured, it may cost me hundreds of thousands yuan," said the driver over the phone to the media, before he gave himself up to the police.

How F'ed up...

That's crazy, I read a similar story recently about a guy who lay dying by the side of the road, people were ignoring him because they thought he was just drunk and passed out

Oh no :( this makes me sad, but please don't tarnish us all with the same brush.

Unfortunately this still goes on in parts of China/oriental world... a lot of the community still adhere to one child per family and only if it is a boy... there are loads of little girls up for adoption for this very reason :(

It is very sad. There are always stories in the Metro about how families cannot afford to feed/house/look after their young children so chain them to lamposts while they go out begging.

So sad... I don't think I will be able to watch the video.

That's horrific - just found the video and it makes it even worse when you actually see the original person who hit the child!

Also, as for the culture, I do find that foreign Chinese students at uni are incredibly rude. Saying that, I guess you couldn't stereotype the entire population of China based on the example I've seen.

In one job i had i had to wear a 2 way radio and had it on the front of my jacket i looked quite smart also people used to think i was a policeman. One day while walking down the street, an older man stopped me possibly thinking i was an authority figure and pointed to the ground where a homeless man was lying on the ground with blood gushing out of his head, dozens of people were obvioulsy walking past him. I have to say i initially felt a bit dubious about getting invloved as what must have been hundreds of people were walking past him and nobody would help, after i got down to have a closer look other started to get invloed too. I called the ambulance and he was carted away. It's seems to be crowd mentality not to get invloved as it could cause you less potential problems in the long run if you don't.

When she goes under the tires my heart sinks, poor little sod. :(

The tyre goes right over her face doesn't it? It just shows you how much force the skull can take.

The bit that I really didn't like is that you can see 'things' all over the road in the pool of blood, are they bones... or bits of muscle/flesh or something?

She also moves a bit after being run over, so maybe she was still conscious and possibly screaming, which makes it even more disturbing (if even possible) that people just ignored her. Animals.

Terrible stuff. :(

Pretty sick. I can't quite work out if the van actually drives over her face. I'm not sure it does, but when his rear wheels get stuck on her, you'd think he'd have stopped to work out what was stopping him from moving rather than just powering through.

My first question really is, why was she there in the first place?

Even then, the way she is treated by the first woman is appaling.#

However, this doesn't come as a surprise in a country where "excess" children (babies) are literally put in the gutters at the side of the road to die. The cost to the state of actually saving people and keeping them alive in China is one that the government does not want to bear.

I've no desire to watch the video, but apparently the van driver was on his mobile according to one of the OP's links.

Also, I don't see this sort of thing as "The downfall of society!" or if it happened in the UK the headlines would state "Broken Britain!". A minority of humans have always been like this and I doubt they'll be much change in the future. People can be so selfish, uncaring and cruel to each other.

Spot on.

Also, we can't really jump to conclusions and neither can we tar the Chinese with one unified brush - this could havc happened anywhere, in any country, I think focusing on "Chinese" is not conducive to a decent discussion here.

There could be some extenuating circumstances (not that it makes it any better of course). Of course it's almost impossible to accept that as a valid excuse, there are none. However the guy may have been drunk or on the phone, or genuinely not notice or thought it was a cat or dog etc... though as I said that doesn't make it right. Unfortunately, the video undoubtedly makes it look more obvious than it might have been. I'm not trying to defend the drivers - I'm merely trying to be objective.

The passers by could have been too shocked and also may not have appreciated it was a person (I'm only playing devil's advocate). Ok I know it's tenuous and implausible for most of us to accept, however I can't understand the video feed so am just trying to provide an arbitrary comment. (It was in Chinese).

There is no escaping that this is a horrid incident. However it's one incident. I'm sure there have been this sort of thing all around the world all the time - it doesn't make this incident any less serious or horrific, and I'm not trying to attenuate the situation - not at all. I just don't think it's fair to isolate the Chinese as a culture specifically for this.

As Kazz has alluded to there will always be some people too self centered or gnerally not interested in offering their help, or just completely oblivious (and not in necessarily a cruel way) to the world around them. It's a sad fact of life that although most if not all of us could safely say we would have acted differently, we don't represent the whole population. However, there will be some people who would walk by because they are just not interested in getting involved. It's sad, sick or whatever word of disgust you want to use, and whilst we may find that reaction abhorrent, unfortunately it's just the way some people are.
