I heard that SSD speeds on an X58 mobo are poor, is this true?

I have just bought a crucial M4 128 ssd which im hoping to get 500mbs and above read speeds and 200mbs write speeds.

It would appear that all your SATA ports are SATA 2.

You have 6 from Intel and 2 from Gigabyte.

The Intel ports will be the best to use and they'll max out at ~280MB/s.

An SSD isn't all about brute speed, things like near instant access times come into it.

From what I've read you'll notice a big difference even if you're only using SATA 2.

I had plans for a sata 3 board.

What sort of SATA 3 board?

If you're planning on getting an X58 board with SATA 3 then the SATA 3 ports will be from an add on controller, usually Marvell.

The Marvell controllers are pretty crap and you're unlikely to get much better performance from them than from the Intel SATA 2 ports.

Somewhat drastic just to get higher maximum SSD speeds.

As I said you'll still notice a big difference even using an SSD on SATA 2.

At the end of the day though it's your money.

Well i spent 130 pounds on an ssd i expect it to not lose a few hundred meg.

I fancied an upgrade anyways.
