All aboard the expenses gravy train.

It's not demeaning - it's the accepted term for the role.

It shouldn't be. It implies that somehow the job requires more sacrifice and duty than one in the private sector, something which the representative unions constantly bang on about. A 40 year career in public sector is described as sacrifice and service - the same in the private sector would be portrayed quite differently.

Too bad, they are de facto slaves whether they like it or not.

No. They're in senior positions that generally require significant travel. If they knew that they would be staying in a Travelodge they wouldn't take the role.

The jobs have to be competitive, the packages have to be attractive.

If I was working at such a senior level, I would not accept a Travelodge for a nights accommodation.
I agree totally with this post.

People regularly assert that the private sector is much more efficient than the public sector. In order to attract highly competent middle and senior managers to the public sector from the private sector, the same sort of benefits must be offered.

Not many golf clubs based in towns. Seems an odd choice for a conference, unless one 'wishes to get away'.

Not many towns not within quite literally a few miles of a Golf Course, either. Come on guys you really are clutching at straws here.

What is it with the obsession of calling everyone slaves lately? Is it to try and make unemployment fashionable or something?

No, its just a fact.

No one ever said you had to be forced into slavery against your will for it to be slavery. :P

I never disagreed with it as well, a necessary evil of the introduction of "money" frankly.

Its pretty standard to have small conferences and internal meetings at nice rural locations with a pleasant conductive atmosphere, good food etc.

I went to a robotics conference in a mansion in the Swiss Italian mountains with a large garden. For a week I ate some of the best food I have ever had and drank 1-2 bottles of good wine a day (I was young and foolish then). All paid by the EU tax payers and Swiss banks.

I honestly have no idea what viewpoint you are trying to advocate here.

Staying in nice places makes you feel much better about doing your job, I have stayed in some dives and some of the most beautiful hotels in the world and it makes such a difference to the result. Taking the Table Bay's bulletproof S Class (expensed) certainly does make you feel good, although in reality it feels just like a regular one:p

some interesting if confusing ones in there as well

wat?

lol the duck tour is a tourist ride around in a ww2 amphibious DUKW (duck) it crosses the Thames its pretty cool ive always wanted to do it.

I guess they corporately hired it for a press shoot

what people are miffed about, is a lot of the people in question are responsible for making a lot of people unemployed and making cuts to a lot of services. i can totally understand why people see this as a little unfair.

because im not a council office bod, as i said in the rest of my post around here councils seem to hire from other councils expecting to get experienced staff.

from what iv seen it normaly ends up with more of the same.

now i dont know what happens are larger councils just at the local ones around here, but from things iv heard it seems the northwest is a breeding ground for managers and executive staff who move on to larger councils or aim to with there yesrs of experience up here.

There is a perfectly good reason you will find that the councils regularly publish these posts in quite big spreads in local and national press but do not get any applications as the job description actually (contrary to populist belief) DOES NOT pay enough money.

Therefore in absence of any outside applications (non civil servants have more sense at that level they can get better salary + expenses elsewhere without having to document every penny to the daily telegraph) they have to promote from within.

The problem is that the UK press has become a cesspit for gutter news and sensationalist stories with little credibility and loads of spin.

Why should they take a cut? You can't be held responsible for everyone and sacrifice everything, this is a global economic crisis, it can't be solved by downgrading to a Travel Lodge. Instead of moaning about how it's unfair, why don't you take it upon yourself to improve your own situation, don't rely on the government, no one really cares about you truly other than yourself, so do something proactive rather than whinge.
