6970 crossfire or 6990?

6970 crossfire is a tad faster and generally less expensive since you are not paying for the luxury of having two gpu's on one pcb.

A couple of 6950's overclocked would match two stock 6970's and cost less still. Keep an eye out for the Toxic edition in particular for when it's next on special offer.

i only have a ocz 850w psu. so 6970 in crossfire could be for me. are there any particular cards i should go for in crossfire. lastly my mobo is the asus crossfire formula v

What brand is your psu? ive 2 6970's in crossfire running no probs on a coolermaster real power 850.

6950 CF. 6950 oc'd = 6970. whether they unlock or not is mostly irrelevant. that they OC is essential. got a HIS Plus edition and it oc's to 900/1375 at stock and no more than 70c.

Gareth of these forums has reported in the past his sytem with a 6990+6950 draws around 675 watts under load. Same mobo as yours.

thanks for that. that's a bit high for me. as i am on my pc all the time.

any idea how much power 2 6970's in crossfire would consume? buying one of these, then buying another the following month seems more sensible to me. i forgot to mention my case is antec 300

With the Asus 6990 priced like it is currently in the OCUK store, I would personally go for it.
It is two underclocked 6970s, It consumes 375w on load, a lot less than 2x6970
and takes up less pci slots, fuitureproofing you for further expansion

According to bit tech the power usage is meant to be 250 watts per card,

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=20342442

Whereas a 6990 tops out at 375, mainly due to the core and ram being clocked down a bit, and theres not 2 pcb's to be powering.

The 6990 has highly binned chips compared to standard cayman gpu's, helping it consume less power than the 6970 setup, with only a small drop in gpu and ram frequency. This binning also see the chips overclock very well and with the use of the Ausum switch can deliver the full 450w to the card for further overclocking.

I had this very decision recently and chose the 6990 as i will add it to my waterloop and the cost of 2 cards+2 blocks was greater than that of the 6990+1 block. If your on air only consider the 6990 if you don't mind some noise and have the space for a card over 30cm long.

6990- £581- Noisy as hell! Not as fast as 2 x 6970's! Sell Deus Ex for ~£17 =£564
2 x HIS ATI Radeon HD 6970 IceQ Turbo's- £560- Best cooler around. Sell the four games for ~£60=£500
2 x HIS ATI Radeon HD 6950 IceQ X PLUS Edition- £460- As above. Sell the four games for ~£60=£400
2x HIS ATI Radeon HD 6950 IceQ X Turbo- £440- Not as good a cooler as the IceQ's, BUT a guy here has unlocked 2 of them to 6970's! Sell the four games for ~£60=£380!

Out of the above choices you would be mad to go for the 6990 for the price premium alone!

The 2 x HIS ATI Radeon HD 6970 IceQ X PLUS Edition's are not worth the extra ~£100(if you sell the games)

My choice would have to be the 6950 IceQ's, clock the nuts off them and buy a 128GB M4 SSD!:D

I run 2 6950 in crossfire on a 5920*1080 eyefinity rig on a HX 750 watt psu and have no problems so your 850 will breeze them or the 6990

6990's are a lot less than £680, the asus is on TWO for £100 less than that and they can be had for even less if you shop around. If your board supports crossfire and you have the slots available cf6950 is probably the way to go. If you want a single card solution and are going to watercool then the 6990 makes sense.

Oops missed that(tired eyes:o) Jeffy B, but I still wouldn't buy one for the price premium but more so for the Harrier Jump Jet acoustics!

Got 2 x 6950>70's with AC extremes myself!:D

It is a bit noisy but i don't think it's any noisier than my 8800 ultra was a few years ago. It'll soon be silenced anyway :)

Considering a 6990 myself come November or December, all depends on how retail BF3 runs at 5760x1080. 2 6970's really weren't cutting it at that res in the Beta. Hoping to sell off one 6970 and crossfire the other with a 6990. Trifire should give that added boost to get it playable at the res i want.

difference between 6950 and 6950 unlocked is 1fps. yes, 1 fps. you might want to get the frozr III, it has 1600mhz vram. which is pretty ridiculous 6400mhz ddr5 ;)
