When should you knock on the door?

I have always been confused about this, especially when it comes to a large number of people in the same room and the door is open.
What do you think GD? Usually I knock if there is less than 5 people in the room and the door is shut.

Depends on what the door leads to.

For instance I wouldnt knock on my front door, if I was inside. And that leads to millions of people!

I would knock on the door if there was just 1 person.....Sat on the toilet...And no I wouldnt enter

Ah the great door etiquette debate, which I assume relates to work.

It doesn’t matter whether there is one person sitting in their office with the door open or closed, or there are several people in a meeting or small office with the door open or closed; I Knock, even if I proceed to go straight in.

The only time I don’t knock is when entering some kind of open plan office.

Also seniority has nothing to do with it, it is polite. More importantly, it sets you up for a grand entrance so people notice you, and puts them on the back foot since you have undertaken the first 'polite' act before they even have time to acknowledge you.

I always knock as I never know if there are Headteacher / Governor Support meetings behind the doors!
But yesterday... i went to take a mug back to the school staff room after being made a cuppa, one knock and straight in.... walked in on a Headteacher/Governor meeting with 5/6people didn't I!!
Apologized twice and walked out.
Worst thing is I didn't even leave my mug!

All the meeting room doors in my office are glass, so instead of knocking you do an elaborate mime dance to check that they're not on a conference call and that it's ok for you to come in.

I once knocked but then cheesecake. I accidentally the entire room. 7 people came out.

Just knock and enter
