Metro 2033

I need to get back into this game I think. Is there any way to compare weapons on the go? I never knew whether to swap over when I found a new gun.

Great game the story and atmosphere is the best part, as for the length steam says it took me 9 hours completed

Really enjoyed it too, only paid a few quid for it in the Steam sales and was a total bargain. Other than some dodgy shooting mechanics it's awesome.

The DoF (depth of field) is in the actual game settings, when you select dx11 it will open up with some settings to turn on/off. This setting will increase your FPS with dx11.

I found not using MSAA gave my FPS back, it was hovering around 26-35 FPS with it on.

Edit: Damn, you're right as well, i can use MSAA without having blur effects from DOF.

This game would have been perfect if it wasn't for the stupid console friendly checkpoint system. That made playing the game in stealth mode virtually impossible. If the enemy get the meerest glimpse of you all attempts at stealth are over from that point onwards, and because you never knew where the next checkpoint was you could never know if all the stealth kills you were racking up would have to be redone over and over because some dude saw you just before you got to the next check point so you could save yur progress. Apart from that it was a very good game.

But surely once you've been sighted, it's time to switch tactics to "all guns blazing"? :)

Of course it is, which is why the checkpoint mechanism rules out trying to play the game as near 100% stealthy as you want to. Switching to run and gun is your only option, unless you like repeating your stealth route over and over until you happen to find when the next checkpoint is going to be. On first play through you are exploring and therefore don't know the routes through a zone. With quicksave you can at least save before you do something risky. I personally like sneaking around and getting stealth kills without alerting anyone, the game seems to allow that as a choice with silent weapons, dark areas, shooting out lights etc, but then completely buggers it up with checkpoints making it impossible to judge when it will next save.

You're right. I changed the default 'r_vsync off' to 'r_vsync on' in the user.cfg, and though the setting stays, it's not fixing the tearing. Still, it's only mild tearing.

DoF = depth of field? Can't find that in the user.cfg. If I turn it off and enable DX11, will I still get the same framerate?

I cant get vsync to work either, but like you the tearing isnt too bad, so its not a big deal.

The only difference between DX10 and DX11 in the game is the higher dof and tesselation. The dof should be switched off for most people as it halves your framerate, and tesselation adds more resolution to geometry and can be hard to spot for some. On my 6970 theres no perceptible loss in performance with tessalation on so just used your personal preference.

And for all those suffering with tearing issues, search Google for a program called RivaTuner and install it. Then go to the folder where the program intstalled to - or use search - and find a program call d3d overrider. When you run this it sits in the background and any game you run it will attempt to force v-sync and triple buffering. This will cure any tearing in Metro for a small to medium performance hit.

This is next in line to be played I think...... been sitting in my steam queue for a while. So many positive reviews - I'm looking forward to this!

Have been hanging on until I find another 5850 to xfire so I can play it in full 'meant to be' graphics.

I never thought I was a graphics ho.... but recently I've caught myself putting off games until I can play them in the full glory..... or mod them heavily.

Perhaps I thought wrong!

just finished the game, started on thursday and finished sat night (steam says 6 hours total). pretty quick game tbh - you can burn through it really easily unless you **** yourself really easily. only 7 chapters and a lot of the parts to a chapter are literally one set piece long.
my thoughts:

graphics are lush
story is actually pretty good.
great gun mechanics although enemies are far to strong.
atmosphere is awesome - you literally hate the bits you have to do solo, good use of companions.
best use of a little kid ever :)

it is very linear , totally thought it would be a stalker like experience but I dont neccessarily mind that tbh... i dont have time to dick about exploring anymore.
the choices in the game arent obvious, and you very much just stumble on them.
the ending dream bits are just weird.

anyhow about a 7/8 out of 10 for me, not amazing but pretty good nethertheless.

Im amazed though that less than 35% of players on steam have actually completed it - WTF its not that hard and its not that long!!lmao.

my favourite game of last year :). i can't wait for the sequel! i think it's very underestimated by many aswell.

Ignored this game for some time, but finally picked it up about a year ago. On my forth ranger hardcore play through- one of the best games of all time.
