Why can't I charge for Junk Mail?

Hear, their, everyware ;)
Being Welsh I get charged £0.05 for asking for a single plastic carrier bag to carry the wares I have just purchased without suffering undue duress or hardship (I am unable to juggle), allegedly due to 'Environmental Issues' (I suspect a huge revenue generator for the Govt. though, call me an old sceptic if you want to..)

And yet, I suffer an almost daily barrage of unsolicited Supermarket Flyers, Fast Food menus, Sofa Offers, 'What's new and exciting at..' Hillary's Blinds, Save the Whales, Feed the Children to the Whales and 'To the Occupier' Junk mail which obviously also affects said 'Environmental Issues' probably to a far greater degree than a Plastic Carrier Bag which is actually useful and can be utilised for other things.

If enough people agree, we can change the Law

So, fellow OcUK Oppressed Occupiers, who's with me? 5p a go would probably net me £2-3 a week which would more than cover my Plastic Carrier Bag fees :D

I TOTALLY agree. It is an outrage and ive read that the volume of junk mail everyone gets contributes a fare whack towards "global wamring"

Also, i HATE the way they say " all profits from bags are donated to some charity blah blah". Yeh, the PROFITS, not the actual cost. So, since introducing a charge for plastic bags supermarkets are making more money :).

Charging for carrier bags is a great idea. We got about 4 huge ratan bags which make carrying shopping much easier and they last for years.

You can recycle the junk mail.

You can't recycle the plastic bag.

Ergo it is not an evironmental problem.

What he said.

OP - If you're so upset about the 5p carrier bag charge why don't you get some strong reusable bags to use when you go shopping? I can't remember the last time I went shopping and came away with disposable platic bags.

Junk Mail serves no purpose whatsoever, it is just resource hungry Marketing spin.

A Plastic Bag is useful and can be re-used.

Ergo, it is an environmental problem.

I'm not upset at the 5p charge, I actually support it. It beggars belief that there is no similar Levy on Junk Mail, therefore I propose we the People start charging for it until they wise up and stop sending it.

We pay for a mail redirect from the UK to here in Oz, so we are actually paying to get junk mail .......

Apart from the energy used in producing the junk mail, taking it to your house, and then the energy used to collect it again and recycle it again. So... apart from the natural resources burned to generate that energy then it's not an environmental problem.

The paying for the bag is NOT the issue, I needed the bag, I had a use for it. I don't just wander into Shops and ask for Plastic Carrier Bags if I have nothing I need to put in them, I also agree with the charge, sure I can take a 'Bag for Life' if I know I'm going shopping, I even carry folded up carrier bags in some coat pockets, but there will be an occasion when I will NEED a bag to carry things and I won't have one on me.

I have never, to this day NEEDED Junk Mail of any kind, although thinking about it, it did come in handy once when my Dog was sick by the front door and I used two Fast Food Menus as a makeshift scoop, but that's the only occasion I can think of and I put that down to my ingenuity rather than the Junk Mailers intentions for their unwanted crap.

Creative accounting... I are confuse.

I find it funny that Sainsburys print on two sides of the receipt to save paper. Then give you some brand match thing that says 'you haven't saved today' which is an even bigger waste of paper. Irony, irony everywhere!
