New York in December for 1 week advice

NY in Snow would be amazing if you ask me!

Actually, with North America being one of the few places I haven't been to that I really want to go to (Japan/Scandinavia being the others), I'd love to go at any time of the year!

Don't blame you for taking on the dare! :p

I'd also be looking to stay in Manhattan - it's all very well staying in Jersey or outside Manhattan if you have company but on your own I'd much rather be in Manhattan where all the proper nightlife is.

I think my friend stayed at the Vanderbilt YMCA which is about $90 a night and in a top location - he said it was decent and best of all right round the corner from the Manchester Pub, lol.

Or Hoboken.

The path is 20mins to 33rd for $2 each way. From there you can walk up to central park easy enough.

I'm living in Newport in Jersey city for 9 weeks for work.

Weather is still ok here at the moment 25C last weekend. I went to NYC in dec 2006 and it didn't go under 10C.

if you want a 2nd city to visit nearby I would recommend Philadelphia, we were there earlier this summer and really enjoyed it, loads better than NY IMO

Been looking at this as an option as its only a few hour drive. What's to see there though? I had a quick look online but nothing stood out.

Off to Vegas in 2weeks. Only £300 each for flights and 3nights.

I have a question for you. Why do most people seem to go to NY after the summer? NY gets freezing in the winter with bitter winds. It's so much better when the sun is out in summer.
During the summer it's very hot, humid, the city stinks, the subway platforms are like ovens.

Much nicer in late September, early October.

our trip was disrupted by Hurricane Irene but we still had a lot of fun, would recommend you stay in the historic area rather than the City Cemtre

thats an amazing deal, well as long as they haven't put you in Circus Circus  even then I would take the flight for that price and arrange alternative accomodation

I wouldnt bother because DC isn't THAT much further and is a better place to visit with more to see. Or Boston.

Have done New York at Christmas twice for a week both times, expect to pay around £1600 with a decent-ish hotel on Broadway.

Would recommend AA from Heathrow and try and blag yourself an upgrade to 1st or Business.

Have fun and visit the christmas light/music show at Saks 5th Ave:

I'm going to Washington DC next Wednesday and then getting the Amtrak to NYC on the Sunday. I found a good hotel "The Jane" in Manhatten for $125 a night; so for 3 night I'm paying around £250. It got really good reviews, the best actually when comparing to other hotels of that price! Will post a review when I'm back!

Makes £1500 per person on 5 days in New York seem pretty poor value!

See I'd totally disagree with that and I'm into holidays where you cram loads in, we spent 5 days in New York in about 2005 and it wasn't enough time I could go back tomorrow and loose another week. Doing New York in two days in like doing London in two days you barely even scratch the surface. Some cities I'd agree 2 days is plenty but not a place like New York, then again I thought 3 nights in Vegas was plenty but Rotty practically lives there so everyones millage will vary!

We'd love to go back and spend another 4 or so days in New York and then drive to Boston etc but to many other holidays on the list at the minute!

Yea blag an upgrade to First, happens all the time that.

Just tip the check-in totty a wink and a £20 in your passport. Simples.

I'm off to Philadelphia next week for 2 days. Might have a chance for a quick look around the evening I get there but I probably won't have much time for sightseeing. Staying right opposite City Hall so I might see the sights but that'll be all.

Off to DC for a week next month. Again not much free time but I might have a few hours in the evenings to visit the National Mall or go peek at the Whitehouse.
