There's a bloke at work who used to do it. Had two tanks, but apparently they then started 'dipping' the engine somehow, as the red dye marks the engine somewhere, which rendered the second tank pointless. If the fines are £500, £1k, crusher as is said above; it is no way a deterrant, and I would not be surprised to see red usage increase, especially in rural areas where fuel is more expensive anyway.

I need a job with a Fuel Card. My friend works for ATS (Mobile) and he gets a £5 voucher at least once every couple of weeks!
It also tends to sit in ***** old tanks which gather condensation so you end up with water in the fuel.

Due to the conditions it's kept in (especially old metal tanks found on a lot of farms) it can be quite dirty. Cost is around 75p a little now.
If you are searched for it, they will most likely dip your tank, If they have more suspicion to believe you have been using it they will check your fuel lines and filters.
If found using it illegally they will try and back trace the amount of tax you have dodged, charge you that as well as a fine.

So if you have a boat you can buy this stuff? What stops someone saying they have a boat and buying loads?
Boats used for domestic purposes can buy rebated fuel, but they pay an additional 60p tax on top rather than 10p (Figures rounded up). However, HMRC made a decision which can be read in the following link:
