Can anyone help advise...
son is getting a pc in his room on which he wants to do some online gaming on.
I already do this and have a bog standard (wireless also) router connected to my PC via cable. Sons room is arround 15 meters away from room where my PC and router is just now.
What im thinking about is how online gaming is over wireless...id expect it to be pretty poor. So to make it better Ive got an option of running another cable from my router under the floor into the other room 12-15 meters away. Or installing a telphone point in his room and and getting another router which he can connect to his PC and phone line in his room.

He currently games on PC through wireless adapter in PS3 connecting to my PC router...and it seems fine for PS3.

Wondering what the best way is...and can I have two different routers in house connected to same phone line and broadband connection.
Im currently using BT broadband and have 8m connection (max in my area)

Cheers If anyone can help.

Look into Power Lines not the cables that come into your house lol. You plug them into your sockets and they basically become an internet access point. Wish I'd have known about them before drilling a few holes in the floor and walls and running 20 metres of PR46 through

yes they work, and pretty cheap and a lot easier than drilling holes in floors and walls
anyone that use these use for online gaming? How does it affect pings etc? Is it a smooth connection, unlike wireless.
Seems amazing...i didnt even know they existed.

I'd keep it simple and run some Cat 5e cable from the router to his pc, that's what I have done.

ideally I would do this...but have to pass 2 rooms..probably under the floor which is going to be messy.

I've never used them myself, but I've heard good things. Plus like I said, drills, holes, walls, floors

Cable is far better home plugs don't always work

only two rooms can't you go into the loft with cable then drop it back down in the room or run it say over door frames it really isn't hard to do and say if you had to use 30 metres of cat5e that would be like £10 set of home plugs your looking at £30-£40

i hear ya...the new bedroom is in extension part of house..so no loft. However there is a hatch in my office room floor that the plumbers used to get in to route the radiator pipes into the rooms of the extension..i will need to have a look see how easy it is to get cable into bedroom. Two rooms in question are on ground floor.

If its doable under the floor...i think i will go cable route. But will have to wait until next week as im away for a few days just now.

Should maybe also add...house is only 4 years old from new..so all mains wiring will be pretty good I would think. Might benefit if using powerlines?

Still would like input from anyone using these poweline network to comment on online gaming :)

Cheers

I used a pair of homeplugs for xbox gaming for over a year and they were spot on. I currently use a pair of solwise gigabit ones for streaming hd movies from the nas to the htpc downstairs and again, they work faultlessly!

They can sometimes be affected by being on different ring mains in the house and best practice is not to use them on surge protected extensions, though I do with no noticeable impact on my use.

My advice though would be the cat 5 cable option as cheaper and more reliabe than powerline/wireless and you will get the most out of your connection.

Initially I'd do nothing, try the wireless and see how it is as you say it works fine for his PS3 and millions of people all over the world are gaming perfectly happily on wirless connections.

Once tested if it doesn't work you are left with the choice as decribed by all the previous posters run a cat 5e cable or use homeplugs, personally unless the wiring was very easy and wasn't going to look horrific (like 99% of surface run cables) then I'd buy and try a set of homeplugs you can always use the distance selling regs for a return if they disapoint.

I use a pair of Solwise HomePlug AV 500Mbps, & find them very good.

Welsh Dragon how do you find those Solway gigabit homeplugs, been tempted to treat myself to a pair.

Toxic if you can go with Cat 5e cable do so, I have my place networked, but still use homeplugs for the printers & tv.
As long as you have a entry & exit hole, it shouldn't be too hard to pull through a cable in a modern house, using the tape measure trick.
