Asus GEN 3 boards

Apart from the pretty gold writing on the box "Gen 3" what is the difference between that board and this one...

http://uk.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8Z68_DELUXE/

....after you update the BIOS wouldn't it be the same thing, minus the pretty gold writing..?

As noted here...

http://event.asus.com/2011/mb/PCIe3_Ready/

and demonstrated here on a Gen 3 board...

No you can update the bios to support Ivy bridge cpu's. But you can't update an ic2 switch to ic3.
Non sli boards may be able to handle pci-e3 with an ic2 switch though.

You beat me to it

Thats what I was going to say, basically a bit more future proof

Im hoping there is a bios update for the P67 maximus iv to support 22nm

... in the above link that I noted it shows at the bottom of the page two separate tables. The boards that are currently out which can support both PCI 3 and the 22nm CPU's and then a list of boards which can support the 22nm CPU's only...

Current non-SLI LGA1155 motherboards from ASUS can also take advantage of PCI Express 3.0. The list below details the minimum BIOS version that adds support for next generation Intel 22nm processors.
So, for example, the following board with a P67 chipset...

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8P67_REV_31/

..will support the PCI 3 std and the 22nm CPU's, accoding to that list.

EDIT: To show the image from the top of the linked page to illustrate that Asus themselves are advertising a P67 board with full PCI 3 and 22nm CPU support...

the second board from the left P867 (REV 3.1)

Yip I see that but it does not show under the specification of that board or Cpu compatability heres hoping but knowing Asus they will make you buy a new board

Just had a look on Asus site and there is a new bios for max iv extreme to support

22nm so thats good now I wonder how much these cpu,s will cost

I saw that one, glad that you took a peep otherwise I was going to post the link :D

Whilst the Maximus IV Extreme (P67) seems to get the 22nm support it is not on the list for being PCI 3 ready.

But as there are zero PCi 3 GPU's etc or 22nm CPU's on the market for quite a while it does not seem to matter.

The point that I was making is that there are quite a number of boards from Asus, and MSI and Gigabyte, already out on the market that might also be compatible, albeit MSI made a bit of a fuss (which might be correct) over Gigabytes PCI 3 claims, already.

My thread got closed when I posted about MSI's claims about Gigabytes PCI 3 boards on the market today actually not being compatible.

When the actual hardware is out it will be then to decide just how correct the above assurances were.

And the point of this post is ?

Yes we know the brand new boards just released (with an ic3 switch) will support Pci-e3.

I'm talking about all the older revision boards, you can't get Pci-e3 by updating the bios alone.
If these older revision boards could run Pci-e3, they wouldn't have to rush out new revisions would they !!!

If you want to check your board, Gen3 boards will start with 3
