Gelid Tranquillo just installed

i5-2500k.
hd5870
MSI/P67A-GD65-B3
650W psu

2intake 1 exhaust fan, plus the stock Gelid fan.


I've overclocked before but not all day, just to familiarise myself with the bios and to say I'd done it.

I've seen people just change the multiplier to say 45 for a 4.5ghz overclock but I have no idea what voltages are good to have. I also just set everything to auto but this lack of technical capability I don't trust, so I waited to get a decent cooler. Anyone got advice on how to overclock safely (besides temps of course)

I'll be running BF3 which will take the most CPU strain and I tend to play a few hours on end.
 
All you need to do is up the multiplier to whatever you want and adjust the voltage until it's stable. Make sure you have CPU-Z, RealTemp and Prime 95 installed first though to save some time.
 
4.4ghz with CPU core voltage 1.344 (by CPU-Z)

Idle temps are 40 celsius by speedfan, which is 4 or 5 degrees more than 3.3ghz....blue-screened when streessing all cores in Prime95.

Is the blue screen a error xxxxxx124. If so then its probably related to CPU Voltage.

Check if the Vcore drops when underload. Maybe watch VCore in CPU-Z while runing Prime.
 
Didn't take them down sorry, I will if it happens again. Right now I'm prime95 at 64-68 degrees, 1.320 Core Voltage and it's not blue-screened in 10 minutes. SO i'll keep it running longer. I did change the CPU voltage in BIOS to 1.28V though after the last blue-screen.

Yep, bluescreened again whilst running CSS for about 45 minutes. Don't know what happened but it was definately a xxx124 error.

Core V set to 1.28
Was getting 1.32 under prime95, hard to know what it was during CSS game.

i would say 1.4 is safe. intel have not given a safe volt limit

just bump up the volts by 0.02 and try again. or make a big jump then try lowering it

each chip is different tho.
 
Tells you here about the voltage they say, under the overclocking guidelines. I myself have 4.7ghz at 1.344 I would not go over 1.38.

look at the pre overclocked bundles ocuk do......

intel will not be happy after writing that thread

and another note sandy bridge boards do 1.65 volt memory.

Mine does 4.7ghz stable with prime and ibt without going near 1.38. I just prefer to stay in the guidelines when doing stuff like this.

4.7ghz at 1.344 :)

you got a good chip then.

They are ocuk's guidelines not Intel's

they have also sold chips with a granted over clock of 4.8 @ 1.4 volts so they went back on there guidelines

Ahhhh I see, so what is the guideline from intel? Or do they not give guidelines. I must admit I have seen posts with people on higher volts then 1.4 even and they all seem fine. But I am a worry guts :p
 
There are no guidelines from Intel yet. There is for older chips.

Look at post 12 with the link to a thread i started. Most people are running them around 1.4 including myself.
