If you had a time machine

Tough choice.

Assuming i would be safe id either want to go back to the Cretaceous period and see what dinosaurs really looked like, or id want to go back to Athurian times to Camelot and live there for a day.

I'd go back to the 20's stick £1000 in a bank and then when I come back to present times, et voila it's grown into millions! Mwahahaha

Not the I've thought about it or anything :p

Well I don't think you have thought about it.
I'm crap at maths but I did a quick spreadsheet adding 5% to £1000 every year from 1920 to 2012 and I get a sum total of £89,005.23

Can somebody verify this?

I'd go back 2 minutes and not click on this thread... Joke!

I would go back to 1973 and become a policeman and then solve crimes using modern methods while always trying to figure out how to get back to my own time... Oh hold on. ;)

I'm not going to lie ... Although im sure there are some amazing things i could see in the past. I would still go back just to put money on the Euro millions (£130m+) as this would have a much greater effect on my life then seeing 2 men fight with swords in a arena, with that money i could see all the amazing things that the present has to offer.

Thats pretty....pointless.

Why?

Not sure if serious.

What part, that 5% is a bit much?
I'm just using 5% has a marker so at the beginning of 1921 I will have £1050 in the bank.
At the beginning of 1922 I will have £1,102.50 and so on.
At the beginning of 2012 I will have £89,005.23

I'm not too good with money so if you could add 5% every year is that what you would get?

I used
1000(1.05^91) and I got about £85k. You don't need a spreadsheet :P
It should work, though 5% is probably unrealistic.

I'm not clever enough for formulas like that :)
Anyway we are both in the same ball park figure wise so my original point stands that EVEN IF Phate could get an high interest savings account of 5% a year he would still only end up with around £85k.

What are the restrictions?

Observation only, no interaction of any kind possible?

Visible to people then, but no other interaction possible (i.e. a projected image)?

Visible and audible?

Full interaction (i.e. I'm actually there)?

Can I bring inanimate objects back with me? Would they be aged by the difference in time between then and now? How about living things, particularly a person?

Can I take things back with me to show people?

Would I be restricted to a small area around the arrival point? That applies to each of the possibilities above.

Depending on the restrictions and apart from the numerous possibilities for becoming extremely rich (which is what I would probably do if it really happened, not least because I could easily do that without having to learn another language just to be understood), a few things come to mind:

i) Find Abraham and somehow stop him founding the Abrahamic religions. No Judaism, no Christianity, no Islam.

ii) Visit Caesar shortly before his death and somehow find out what his intentions were. Did he intend to restore the republic or was he intending to end it, remain de facto emperor and establish a dynasty? While there, buy a few histories of Rome from Roman writers. Too early for the really famous one by Titus Livius, but there would have been earlier ones. Also, watch a chariot race at the Circus Maximus. A one-shot deal to go back to ancient Rome and watch a chariot race? Of course I would. Me and a quarter of the entire population of one of the biggest cities in the world.

iii) Prevent his assassination...but that would be messing with history for the sake of it. I don't know what the result would be.

iv) Now I've mentioned it...go back and get a complete copy of Titus Livius' history of Rome. Which would probably also work as a way to get quite rich, because I could sell that for quite a lot.

v) Convince Hero of Alexandria that his steam engine could have practical applications. He was far from being purely a theorist - he invented and built devices as diverse as pumps for fire engines and coin-operated vending machines - so it shouldn't take much to persuade him. Start the industrial revolution in the mid 1st century AD - that would change the world quite a lot.

vi) Find someone who knew exactly why Stonehenge was built and what it looked like when completed.

vii) Make the Treaty of Versailles much less harsh on Germany, in an attempt to prevent WW2.

1 trip? I could do hundreds even if all I could do was watch. There is so much that isn't known about history and so much more that is known but would be worth watching anyway. Cromwell taking the mace. The passing of the Reform Act of 1832. Etc, etc.

What if you were to go back in time, win the lottery, with instructions to be kept hidden from yourself, and managed by someone like barclays wealth until this day.

Then when you come back, you have an obscene amount of money :)

Well if I had a time machine I'd go back to a few hours before the biggest lottery win and write down the winning numbers however my query was because Phate said he would put £1000 in a bank in the 1920's and on his return he thought he'd be wealthy.

Probably just a random day at college. I loved college, always basically a day of chilling out with friends and having a laugh while getting a qualification for doing hardly anything.

That or back to the day when I was asked by the girl I used to fancy if I'd go out with her but for some stupid reason I said no
