Line attenuation gone through the roof, switched to Sky

attenuation will usually be measured a little higher (~7dB In my experience) If you move to a router with a Broadcom chipset, just because it measures differently. In this case it certianly looks like the physical fault is the issue, but don't be too upset if your attenuation isn't as low as it was before.

Turns out it was 2 connections at the exchange for the house Swifty.

lol mrbios, shame it's such a **** speed.

Here it is tonight. Actually slower than yesterday, but I suppose the line attenuation is down a bit and the noise margin increased.

From what I could gather from the woman on the phone I don't think they're even going to bother starting DLM until the fault is fixed.

try in the master socket with everything disconnected if its still an issue call Sky...

no one on this forum is going to be able to resolve a line issue

I have sky too, and with 36db downstream im still getting 10mbit download, crap pings though! Deffo get sky to get bt involved.

Similar thing happened to me, my bro was trimming the hedges out side and damaged the cable, i noctied major performance issues. We could hear a lot of crackling on the line.

Do a quiet noise test and see what its like? I phoned our PSTN line provider (Tesco provide our voice calls) and BE test's shown copper line fault (the cut), so we got a BT engineer out, luckily they didn't charge us. As we said it looks like someone cut the cable but wasnt sure who. However some providers or BT may charge.

While it does sound like you have a line problem, the Attenuation changing on Sky isn't a fault in itself - I've recently moved to Sky and have exactly the same results, as does a neighbour. I've spoken to Sky's CST and apparently it's down to their line profiling software, as an example DLM keeps kicking in and sticking me on a 2Mbps line profile, this gives me a Downstream Attenuation of 61.5dB and an Upstream Attenuation of 38.5dB, when they manually adjust the line (using G.DMT, the same modulation as the 2Mbps line profile, so it's not the modulation causing the fluctuation, as you would expect) I get a Downstream Attenuation of 55.0dB and an Upstream Attenuation of 31.5dB.

Compare this as to when I was with TalkTalk (and every other ISP I have had to deal with at work) where your Attenuation is linked to your loop length, very strange behaviour but apparently this is the cause of the wandering attenuation.

Contact BT or who ever supplied the landline and put in a fault about noise/crackling on the line. Just do not mention anything about broadband.

Switching routers to a different type of chipset, or changing ADSL modulation type (going from MaxADSL to LLU for example) or even moving to a different ADSL provider with different DSLAM can cause your apparent attenuation to change - however, for the attentuation suddenly start climbing causing sync speed to drop without changing anything is not normal and is indicative of a fault. Add to that the noise on the voice side and that points even more to a faulty line.

Well I've just been in a made rush to get dress... as I was about to get in the shower I looked out the window and seen an Openreach van outside, so didn't get in the shower had a wash and got changed very quickly.... but then he just drove away.

He must have been sitting there for at least 15 minutes!

Just had a text saying my line fault has been fixed, so these are the router stats at the moment.

Hopefully Sky will start DLM right away and my speed will hopefully shoot up. Doesn't seem to be any noise on the line either now, which is good. :)

You may need them to get the target margin reset. Sometimes they can get stuck and no amount of waiting will bring it back down.

Bear that in mind if the SNR doesn't start coming down.

Well the lady I spoke to said once the line fault had been sorted then CST should address the other issues right away. I'll give it until Thursday when I'm next off work and if nothing has changed by then I'll give them a ring.

Or should I ring them today to make sure they get theirs asses into gear?

always worth giving them a call matey, even if they confirm everything is in place, then a call on the day as well, its very important to you, but just another call to them so could be forgotten etc.

On the phone to them now. He's saying the max access speed is 10mb but it should be able to get higher but he's just getting some one else to run tests and if they can't get it higher then they will raise the issue to a different department.

On hold to go through to CST now. Guy managed to configure it his end but said they'll be able to do more tests and other stuff.

Here it is right now
