ASUS PA238Q - A good buy?

Well I have finally ordered a monitor after a week or so of research and my final decision in the end came down to the price. I initially wanted a 24 inch monitor but have gone for an ASUS PA238Q to save some money and it was a steal at less than £200. I have ordered it and will be picking it up in a day or two.
Oddly though, this company had the same model listed twice, one at £230 yet they are exactly the same, or are there 2 versions that I don't know about?
The model number is 90LME4150T00081C-
Google identified it as the PA238Q. Maybe a mis-price? If so, I got lucky :D

My other option was a Dell U2312HM but this was slightly more expensive and slightly slower response time.

So, does anybody have one and is it any good?

I don't have one but from the reading I have done, mostly on [H]ard_OCP both the new Asus ProArt monitors, the 23" and 24" are supposed to be very good. Although they are basically the same as the Dells at around the same price points mind. I'm not sure about the 23" but the 24" Asus has some rather nice features.

I've just received the December issue of PC Format.

Their verdict on the PS238Q:

  • Fabulous IPS panel
  • Clean bright LED backlight
  • Afforfable pricing
  • Excellent factory settings
The (very nearly) perfect monitor has finally arrived. Buy at least one.

95%.

Thanks for the sharing that review :) I will have to find that magazine and have a quick look myself.

I hope I've made the right choice going from a 20 inch 16:10 to a 23 inch 16:9. Hope I don't miss the extra space. I wanted a 24 inch but I couldn't justify spending an extra £100 for it.

Very interested in this monitor as well, but some buyers seem to have extreme backlight bleeding: http://www.prad.de/board/monitore/t...sten-allrounder-ips-panel-prad-de/#post362654 (German language but the pictures speak for themselves, the user says it is noticeable in everyday's use with standard daylight conditions on already.)

Can anyone here confirm this?

The PC Format review says "our review sample had the slightest whiff of backlight bleed on the right hand edge".

A bit different than the one in the thread.

Which one is typical I couldn't say.

The prad.de review (probably the best monitor test site in Germany) said the same. But many users seem to be sending it back for these reasons. Maybe asus has quality issues and carefully selected the test samples? Obviously happy users tend not write as much as angry users, that's why I am asking for hands-on experience.

Was all set to order one of these, not so sure now, back light bleed and also the high pitched whining issue that is mentioned at anything other than 100 percent brightness.
Anybody out there using one of these?

I'm looking for a new monitor too, like the look of the PA238Q, have you got yours yet Drunkmonkey?
Where are you getting it from?

I am picking mine up Monday. I was hoping to get yesterday but they couldn't process my order quick enough and they close at weekends.
Can't say on here where I got it but it was a bargain at £191 and they only had 8 in stock when I ordered on Thursday night but they have already sold out.

I'm not sure what the difference is between the two models (Model 90LME4150T00081C being the more expensive one yet both have the same specs from what I can find).

Wow, that is bad. Does it also have a lot of dead/stuck pixels or is it just that photo?

None that I was aware of (I think that's dust in the pic) but I wasn't looking very hard. I saw the bleed, chuckled and put it back in the box.

I was quite glad to get back to my 6 year old SPVA. ;)

I'm currently considering an HPZR24w. Bit more expensive but bigger and true 8bit output.

I'm starting to regret buying one. I'm still waiting for the shop to email me to say I can pick it up but not sure if I want it now.
I mite resell it as I could probably sell it for more than I bought it for (£193). The shop have since increased the price (£231), it seems they forgot to add VAT.

I think for that money it's well worth giving it a go. If you get a duffer then keep swapping them out till you find a good'un.

Mine had miserable backlight bleed too........

Also, the anti-glare coating was biazzare. It seemed.....blotchy.

I may have just had a stinker, but I'm not risking another one. RMA'd.

That's shocking. Since the specs and reviews are quite good, normally I would give it a try, but since I don't have another monitor to fall back to and can't afford to buy two at a time, it's probably going to be a far from perfect Dell, which at least seems to satisfy customers.

Well I've finally got my PA238Q and first impressions? Wow...simply amazing! Incredible colours out of the box. Photos have never looked so good and gaming is a whole new experience! I've tested NFS: Hot Pursuit and Deus Ex: Human Revolution, both look fantastic, so much more detail that I never noticed before.
I never expected much coming from a VA panel as I thought my ViewSonic was pretty amazing but this just blows me away.

I haven't gone through all the settings yet, there are so many options to change, maybe too many but to be honest I have hardly had to change any settings at all. I did download a colour profile from a review site and installed that but I can't tell if it did anything.

I don't have any dead pixels but I do have a very faint back light bleed in the bottom right corner but that's it. It's hardly noticeable unless you look directly in the corner of the screen. It certainly doesn't look anything like the one in the photo above.
I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. Nothing wrong with the anti glare coating either, it looks and feels the same coating as on my VX2025.
I'm so happy with this monitor. I've already have a few comments about the picture quality. This monitor is even better than I thought it was going to be.

Overall 9/10
