Just waiting on my new 4S to be delivered bought from Apple. I currently have a 3g and I was just going to back it up in iTunes, and transfer it across to the 4S. Is it this simple from that side of things?

The problem I've just realised is that I have a full size SIM card which won't fit into the 4S as it takes micro-SIMs. Looking around it seems you can cut them to fit, but I would rather avoid doing this if possible - what happens if I screw up?

I've been with O2 since late 2008, so my initial contract that came with the phone is up and I now have a simplicity contract that doesn't end till August next year. If I contact O2, will they give me a replacement micro-SIM to replace my existing one for the new phone or have I done something daft?

Just download a template and practice on one first then do the real thing. Really easy i've done about 8 now.

If you **** it up then just ask O2 to send you a micro sim. Risk free really

I just went to a phone shop and paid a pound and they cut the sim down, saved my time and risk of messing up.

I cut them free hand with out a template. Always over cut, but they are so hard to **** up. As said download the template and it's a peice of **** just don't cut the chip itself.
Or for about £3.50 you can buy a sim card cutter of the bay.

O2 will send you a free one. You then use their SwapMySim site to transfer your number from sim to microsim. Simples, just go on the O2 site.

Just do this, or even simpler, pop into your local O2 store and they will give you one there and then free of charge.

I did something similar - moved from a 3G to a 4S and had a standard SIM tied to my contract.

All you need to do is apply for a micro-sim for free here (or pick one up in an o2 store for free). Then when you receive the new micro-sim - just go to this page and it will make the new micro-sim the active one with your number/contract on it.

instead of messing about why dont you just go on the o2 website, get a micro sim sent and have the number transferred?

We dropped into an o2 shop at the weekend for the missus and it took no longer than 5 minutes.

I couldn't be bothered to wait for the service to transfer between simcards etc. so I just went ahead and bought a cutter.

I could have cut it out, but I saw little point for the sake of £7 that the cutter cost me, and it was delivered the very next day.

This way I could use my 4S the moment I got it, too :)

Cheers, was searching for the link on the website but couldn't find it, micro-SIM ordered.

I'm with O2 and I got the sim from them. They sent it by courier (a bit extreme but they did!) and it arrived within 48 hours.

Then do the website bit to swap the number over.

As you're moving from a full sized sim to a micro it can easily take 24 hours for the swap. Mine took about 10hrs I think. When your old phone drops O2, you'll just need to do a hard restart on the 4S for it to pick up the provider.

You might be better getting a microsim in store. The O2 micro-sim request site is iPad based and the one they sent me out would not work with my phone. Picked one up instore and it was fine.

I think you may have been using this page - which is specifically for data sims. I'm not sure if this would work in an iphone properly.

This different page is the one to go for if you are going for an iPhone 4/4S, this worked fine for me.

Yeah looks good, not sure that page you mention existed when i ordered mine (couple of weeks before release). All the pages just linked back to that ipad one.

Ok, got the phone and micro SIM all activated. I've backed up my old phone. Do I need to do the configuration that the phone asks me when I first switch it on, or do I just plug it into iTunes and restore from backup?
