Hopeing someone can advise
My ati 5850 supplies sound and video over hdmi to an onkyo receiver, with projector out (hdmi) and normal speakers.
Is there a way of configuring either the pc or the av receiver so that
1. when i switch off the projector, the PC doesn't step down its sense of the resolution of the connected video output device.
2. when i switch off the av receiver, the pc and all apps running on pc loose sense of connected 'sound card'.
ie virtualise the services of the av receiver, so the pc remembers what was connected even when the projector/av receiver is switched off. Apps and games running when the projector and av receivor are switched off will fail currently.

This is to do with EDID. With the projector switched off there's no response to the graphics card's request for a confirmation of the display status.

I don't know if there's an option in your graphics card to change the EDID request from "Constant" to "Only at switch on" or whatever the equivalent working is for your card. I know I can do it with the scalers that I use for installations.

The other solution is a box that stores the EDID info. I've used these in multiroom installs to get round exactly this problem. They're not cheap though.

edid looks promising, from a quick google..thanks

Pretty much a well known and anoying problem in HTPC circles.

The only sure fire way to fix it is with one of these:
Gefen HDMI Detective Plus

It basicly sits between your PC / HTPC and your reciver and feeds a constant EDID signal to the PC, essentialy tricking it into thinking the display is still active.
