I'm currently working on a casual basis, so I find myself with quite a bit of spare time, so I've been toying with the idea of dabbling in a bit of e-commerce. Currently looking in to the legalities, what needs to be in place before you even consider selling your first item.

So referring to OcUK, you obviously trade under the name Overclockers UK, but I notice you're registered with companies house as 'Esnet Ltd', what's the purpose of this, why would you want to do that?

not saying this is the reason but a few folks I know who have set a business up buy an "off the shelf" pre registered company, these often have random names but are easy for a new start up

You can trade under a different name than the company name.

I trade under a different name than the companies registered name. Though it is similar. Pretty sure you need to have a "XXXX LTD trading as YYYY" or something similar to stay legal that way.
For me, it was a change of direction for the company, and a whole rebrand. No idea if I can post it here, and do not want to get wrong.

ESNET could be Eduardo Spie NET Ltd :p

This, in the past it took a while to register a company so speed up registration Accountants would pre register some company names. When a new customer came along the company was transferred into the new customers name. These days registering with Companies House is much simple so you can pick which ever name you want rather than buy off the shelf.

Could be the pre-registered company, but more likely it's the name of the company where overclockers is the name they choose to trade under, which is all perfectly normal.

It is simply the company name. Maybe Esnet Ltd has more business interests other than Overclockers or maybe they are leaving that option available for future ventures.

It is quite common for businesses to do this.
