M54 sounds like a bag of spanners

I know the M54 sounds like a dog at idle, but this really sounds like someone's stuck a piece of card in some bicycle spokes to emulate a motorbike.

It's obviously worse now that the weather's become colder, but it just sounds dreadful when it's idling from cold.
I suppose I should've recorded the video, but sounds really tappety.

My M54 doesn't sound bad at all at idle? I certainly wouldn't say it "sounds like a dog" at all!

Perhaps check the oil level?

It's still well above minimum. It's going in for an Inspection II in a fortnight so maybe they'll make it sound better after I throw £500 at it.
I'll record it next time I start it when it's light :p

I don't know how much it'll cost but if it's less than €500 I won't be too upset.

They won't even let me bring my own oil. They likened it to wine in a restaurant.

Something probably broke on the way to work this morning just for good measure. I have no idea what I hit as I was looking in my mirror at the time, and it was dark, but it make an almight bang and a thud.
Perhaps it was just a pothole, but I'd be amazed if nothing broke.

£500 insp 2 isnt too bad mine is due in 6500 miles, seems like only yesterday it was 14500 :( I've heard the shimming can shut up the rattle if it's got really bad :)

Im a little ashamed of the noise at idle, but as soon as it rises it sounds so much better.

Ive noticed that the exhaust note from the outside is ok too at idle, but its shameful near the bay.

Yeh, BMW are advertising it at £319 for a 6cyl E46 (could probably get that down to around £280 if you bring your own oil - which isn't bad at all!)

At which point, I would tell them where they could shove their own oil and take it somewhere else.
If I lived in the UK I would do the same, unfortunately they're all like that over here.

Case in point, it was a mission to find a place who'd fit some tyres I bought on the internet.
"You didn't buy the tyres here so we're not interested" was the response from the majority of tyre places.

I paid £329 at BMW.
TBH I don't know how much it'll cost, I didn't ask.
I want them to investigate the control arm bushings too, so when I call them back I'll check the price.

What is the mileage of your M54?

I was being self obsessed as usual and focussing on the insp2 cost for my car :p

unless of course that price refers to an m3 in which case please tell me where!! :D

The M3's inspection 2 will be more like £900
The same service I have coming up for my Z4M :(

don't be duped into paying that much, you can get BMW dealers to price match munich legends and get it for £500, indy's can be a bit cheaper infact some will do it for £250 if there is no shimming required.
