Hi,

I am in need of a new phone, still running Windows Mobile 6.5!

Which would you choose out of these 3 options?

1) iPhone 4S
2) Samsung Galaxy S2
3) Wait, there will be something better out in 3-6 months...

I will be buying SIM FREE, as i will just put my pay as you go sim in it.

Thanks!

Requirements are just for the best phone available, hardware and software, those two listed are what i thought were commonly believed to be the best out there at the moment. Mostly i use my phone for email, twitter, web browsing, taking pictures.

Two points to take into account:

Win 7 phone doesn't really float my boat, not sure their app store will be very good tbh based on my experience with Win 6.5.

Also, want to try and avoid the Apple lock in, which i fear will happen with an iphone, i own zero other Apple products, except for itunes.

Well, the iPhone 4S is the best (for me, it's situational) overall, but the Galaxy S II isn't far behind and it's also cheaper.

Especially if you want to avoid the 'Apple lock in', assuming you mean being 'trapped' by them as you will have bought apps on the iOS platform, the same can happen with Android though.

The Galaxy Nexus and Motorola Razr are both out fairly soon so maybe you could wait for those as well.

SGS2 is probably more up your street then. If you find the experience a bit technical you can always grab an iPhone second hand in January when everyone sells their old ones.

Wouldn't mind the iPhone 4S myself.
Over 2yrs it would end up costing over £1000.
Sounds a lot for a phone.

Yeah that is too much if you ask me...

This is why i will buy Sim free, without the £30 a month and 24 month contract...

I can then sell it when the next new phone comes out, and get maybe half the money back....

iPhone contract prices are very expensive, there's no avoiding that really. They do vary a little bit though so have a look around.

I have asked in the o2 shop is online giving better deals and they told me its all the same now, no difference, so I don't know.

Windows Mobile 6.5 and Windows Phone 7 are 2 completely different OS's just for reference.

Yes, but they share similar "qualities", in that neither are as good as their competitors (iosx/android).

I think the only area where wm/wp excels is within an Exchange/enterprise environment.

So judging by the general consensus, is the S2 a bad move at this point in time? (e.g. it’s been out a while now and there are better things coming out to replace it? Any news on a S3?)

The 4S is still a strong contender, but i am a little annoyed it's an 18+ month old design (which is a hell of a long time in the mobile phone world) and that screen is starting to look a little small now.. plus the price of the damn thing, and the way they shaft you for memory...

Win 7 is not really an option, as other have said, it may be good, but the competition is better. Resale value will be the poorest out of all the devices mentioned as well i think.

T

Not really. Galaxy Nexus comes out soon but it's only to showcase Android ice cream sandwich (4.0). The camera isn't as good, neither is the battery life.

The real winners are the people that purchased the sgs2 on release.

The S2 isn't a bad move, but you should wait a little while and see whether you like the Motorola Razr or Galaxy Nexus more.

I broke it down in another thread as follows -

+/- points for the Nexus against the Galaxy S II :

+
  • 720p HD screen
  • Stock Android, ICS and fast updates
  • Looks (and probably feels) better
  • NFC
-

  • Limited to 16GB of storage
  • 5MP camera that is likely inferior to the Galaxy S II
  • 1080p video is probably inferior too
  • More expensive
  • Pentile screen could take away some of the 720p magic, but it's apparently good
  • Slower internal hardware overall, but still quite capable

Pentile Screen isn't really a big deal, tester here looks fine (res is a crapload higher so effect is less pronounced). The cost / availability would be my biggest negative, it's likely to cost a lot more than S2 deals as the SKU has a higher cost. NFC is hard to call as a positive when nothing uses it decently too, it's missing a magic application for the tech right now to me. It's not nearly ubiquitous enough for it to see a decent application either yet, good ol' catch 22. They should put it in the iPhone 5, that would sort the problem.

Vs. the S2 i'd say it's fairly equal, you'll get ICS on the SGS2 soonish anyway and samsung's support is generally very good so either way you'll probably end up with a well supported, well made phone that will last you. Razr's OK but nothing mind blowing, I'd rather have the SGS2 now than the Razr later. One nice thing about the razr is it will likely coming with a 16gb MicroSD. Motorola better suck it up this time and push out the updates though, Create and shove out with no support is not a business model that will win long term customer favour.
