My Sister has just passed her driving test finally lol, now she looking for her first car, nothing to expensive, she 32 so her insurance won't be all that massive compared to a 17 year old new driver.

As this is her first car & a single mother she doesn't want to spend a massive amount on a car, she seen a T reg Cilo 1.2 Grande, with 66k on the clock that according to her has been well looked after ie full service history ect & 1 owner from new for £1000.

Im basically going to go round later today & have alook at it, as im not well up on car's myself is there anything i should be looking out for before she parts with her cash.

That seems an awful lot of money for a 12 year old base spec Clio. They certainly have their fair share of reliability issues, as you'd expect from a small French car.

No, they aren't.

The Ford Fiesta 1.25 used to be the staple recommendation on here for a cheap first car. Don't know if its still the case, but I definitely wouldn't want to drop £1k on a T reg Clio.

At this sort of budget, expect to pay 1-2k for anything with decent Tax and Mot and in good running condition. On that basis, if it is a good runner, why not get it? Cheap to run and insure unless there are major mechanical issues cropping up.

Age can be quite a killer on these more than mileage. The problem with this age of clio though is it is still suffering from the 90's French build quality and electrical niggles.

I sold my 1996 fiesta si in 2008 with 44k on the clock (genuine and in really top condition) for £1200. When you look at what else is around in this price bracket, it can be a gamble.

Paid 950 for my focus - everything that has gone wrong on it do far has been uber cheap to repair and very easy too. My g/f who dislikes driving in general (and has a fiesta, but the 1.3 POS version) got used to it in a few miles.

Well i've just rang them to find out some info, basically the car had a recent cambelt change at 55k, new drums at the back & new front disc's and pads, the car has only ever been serviced by Renault, with full service stamps in the book, has 2 keys, interior is in very good condition, no cig burns as the owner doesn't smoke, no rips or plastic scratches, the car been garaged from new, paintwork in top condition.

As for any niggles, it did have a central locking problem earlier on in it's life but they got this sorted by Renault when it was still under warrenty, apart from that she said it not caused her any problems since.

The reason she selling is because she got a new yaris.

She been trying to sell the car for a while now with no intrest, mainly because of the price she asking.

But if all checks out as to what she said & she desperate to get shut then i reckon i could get a couple of hundered off, if i go round with cash.

I loved my clio, was fairly reliable and very good to drive. I sold it a few months ago for £400, same age but worse condition than the one in the OP, so £1k is waay too high imo

Sounds like it could be a good buy then. Dealer probably offered her £200-300.

You could also spend / waste lots of time looking at other cars so it depends how patient you can afford to be.

You always take a risk at this end of the market and age and any car could have something major fail.

Judging by what you have said, i think that while that the belts have been done and the full history is intact its not so bad a deal.

If really is in such good condition with low mileage for the age i dont think spending around £1000 is too bad.

Seriously guys, think about this, its £1000 on a T reg Clio!

There is sooooooo much more out there that makes a better first car.

Ill admit thats a lot for a t-reg clio. My 52 plate Clio I part ex'd it for £1000 and it had done 109,000k miles.

She been trying to sell the car for a while now with no intrest, mainly because of the price she asking.

Opportunity to knock her down a couple of hundred quid.
