Camera choice dilemma - 7D or 5D MkII

I don't intend to stand in torrential downfall taking photographs but it will no doubt encounter some water for a brief period at some point. I wont allow it to get too wet at all!

My main concern is the humidity. I have already been advised by my lecturer(it's a university trip as part of my degree) that changing lenses is a big no no because of mold build up inside the camera so I plan on taking a 24-70L as my only lens.

I would rather avoid buying a Nikon because I have a 70-200L already.

Raymond, aside from using a fridge what would you recommend I do to decrease the likelihood of condensation build up?

it does mean that you will have to budget lenses into your decision.

If you mean "However the bigger the sensor the better the glass needs to be."

Then the opposite is actually true in most cases.

If you want weather sealing with Canon you need a 1D something, 7D just isn't very water sealed especially towards the back of the camera.

Is the 70-200 the IS version? If not then it's not weather sealed.

My advice would be, no matter which camera you get, think about getting some camera insurance that will guard against accidental damage while abroad, that way you can relax and enjoy the trip.

Like I say, I don't intend on using it in rain. It will only get wet during the time when the rain starts and when I pack it away. I don't intend on shooting in rain.

I won't be taking the 70-200 with me. The reason I mentioned it is because I don't want to change over to Nikon due to owning it.

Recommend any decent camera insurance?

5D classic with 24-70L (compliments the 70-200L) is probably the best bang for buck at the minute in terms of shear image quality (better IQ than 7D + 17-55).
Also 5D AF performance is not as bad as allot of people think and is perfectly adequate for most situations imo.
 
Not an actual beer fridge, LIKE a beer fridge. It's a specialist unit you can buy out there.

There is nothing wrong changing lenses outside, the concern is storing it constantly at that humidity, hence the need for those dehumidifier cabinet. Or stock of on silicon gels, and Wack loads in your camera bag.
 
7D is more of a all rounder camera then the 5d mk2. The 5d mk2 does fantastic static images whilst the 7d does good static images and fast moving stuff that the 5dmk2 cant do very well at.
 
Just bought (as in yesterday) a 7D as an upgrade to the 500D and it really does feel in a different league.

Going to take it out today and try and suss the AF modes as it is failry complicated to a newbie like me.
 
I've been looking at the Sony A77 these past couple of days. Looks pretty good in comparison to the 7D now.

no actually was refering to when i moved form a 400d to a 50D with the same sensor size but i actually found some of my lenses performing worse on that sensor. The good lenses performed well and lesser lenses showed more faults. The 50D sensor could resolve more detail than the 400D could. I ended up having to get better glass.

Vastly better than Carl Zeiss optics? You'd be surprised. The gap between lenses has been bridged nearly. The 16-50mm F/2.8 kit lens is supposed to be pretty special.

I scratched Sony off a long time ago since only having Canon bodies but the Sony A77 does look pretty promising to be honest.

12 FPS, Great Screen, Amazing Auto Focus in video, Promising EVF viewfinder, 24.3mp, in built IS.

It is an astounding camera. Well, compared to my 500d :D
Taking it to a cross country race on Saturday, paired with a 70-200mm. A tidy combination for gulls on the lake so will be fine for runners.

Not just about optics quality, but choice.
 
My camera has been shipped today(should have been earlier but had to send a scan of my driving license and phone bill) but on the tracking page it says that it should be delivered tomorrow!?

Surely it wont be that quick for delivery from Hong Kong?

I bought a second hand 24-70 2.8 L to pair up with it which should arrive tomorrow too. I really hope it does so I can give it a good testing on the weekend.
