ASUS PA238Q - A good buy?

If I was allowed to trade in here, I would offer you to pay the normal price, just to get this monitor and avoid the backlight-roulette. But seems like I have to order one by myself.

Thanks for that, any noise at all from the Monitor, it is the one thing that I do not want!

Mine is pure silent :D

I did get a bargain for £193 quid but I couldn't let it go even if you offered me the normal retail price, it's just too good. Hehe :)

Well I've finally got my PA238Q and first impressions? Wow...simply amazing! Incredible colours out of the box. Photos have never looked so good and gaming is a whole new experience! I've tested NFS: Hot Pursuit and Deus Ex: Human Revolution, both look fantastic, so much more detail that I never noticed before.
I never expected much coming from a VA panel as I thought my ViewSonic was pretty amazing but this just blows me away.

I haven't gone through all the settings yet, there are so many options to change, maybe too many but to be honest I have hardly had to change any settings at all. I did download a colour profile from a review site and installed that but I can't tell if it did anything.

I don't have any dead pixels but I do have a very faint back light bleed in the bottom right corner but that's it. It's hardly noticeable unless you look directly in the corner of the screen. It certainly doesn't look anything like the one in the photo above.
I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. Nothing wrong with the anti glare coating either, it looks and feels the same coating as on my VX2025.
I'm so happy with this monitor. I've already have a few comments about the picture quality. This monitor is even better than I thought it was going to be.

Overall 9/10

Bah! It seems I was unlucky.

I'm still stuck without a monitor. It's taking forever for "one of the competitors" to refund my cash.

Received mine a short while ago, so far so good. Very little bleed, almost cannot see it, slightly pink towards the left at switch on, but un-noticeable in use. No pixel problems, no noise at all. Will try some different settings later. Excellent stand. Lots of cables.
Great service from overclockers.
Well Pleased.

Hey guys, been using the Samsung 226BW for a good 4/5 years now and I'm looking to upgrade, and I didn't want to make a new thread to spam the boards and I thought this would be most relevant place to post.

I'll mostly be using it for games, tv, films and word processing, and maybe also my xbox 360 when I move house (and lack the space for my current TV). I'm looking at 24 inch monitors but would this 23 inch ASUS be a good alternative?

I'm also looking in the £200-£300 price range. The games I will probably be playing will be BF3(pc) and Fifa12 (xbox), and I'm not too concerned about picture quality for movies as I do have a blu-ray drive but I'll most likely be watching fairly low quality , or 720p episodes of house etc.

Cheers!

(Also I'm looking to upgrade because the monitor is pretty terrible, dead pixels about the place, screen flickering and when I turn it on it takes longer to boot than my computer (about 3 minutes) from a black screen)

The Asus would be a very good bet for your price range, however if you have upto £300 to spend then consider the Dell U2412M also, it's a 16:10 screen rather than 16:9 and offers and resolution of 1920x1200 which in my personal opinion is rather better for computer work, not so much for using an Xbox though, but you'll just get some black lines top and bottom with a 16:9 film/tv episode/xbox game ...you end up with the same viewing area then anyway, but you have a bit more the rest of the time.

I recently bought the Dell and really couldn't be more pleased with it, it exceeded my expectations (then again I am a cynical git). Really though it's much the same as the Asus except 16:10 with a larger panel. However you will need to be able to connect your computer via displayport (unless you want to juggle the DVI connection) as this screen does not have an HDMI for your Xbox so you will have to connect the xbox via an HDMI>DVI connector ...the screen does support HDCP over DVI though so there shouldn't be any issues with this.

If you would prefer to spend less and have an HDMI port and a 16:9 screen then the Asus would be great.

Food for thought anyway.

Cheers for the quick response!

Yeah the juggling of connections sounds like a bit of hassle but that asus looks nice. I had originally looked at the BenQ EW2430 24-inch, but it had some pretty negative reviews.

Those isolated cases of backlight bleed and stuff are concerning me with the asus but it does indeed look the best bet. When will the large manufacturers most likely release their new range's (including 24") and should xmas price drop affect their prices?

Sorry to derail the thread and plug your knowledge too much but I really hate buyer's remorse :l

On paper, the Asus has the better panel, but I don't think, this will be too much of a difference for you. I should get mine tomorrow, due to my long history with IPS monitors, I should be able to tell more this evening. Don't know the new Dells though (my last one was the 2209WA).

Just to give you an idea what the inches mean: 23" 16:9 is pretty much the same as 24" 16:10, except for a little height. The 23" versions of Asus and Dell are on a this week only offer currently - didn't see better prices anywhere else.

I'm not a hardcore gamer, so I usually don't care, but some say, overdrive is better implemented in the Asus. Maybe this makes a difference for you.

Well I've just started playing Battlefield 3 on this monitor and I have quite a lot of ghosting on it which is a shame as it's a really nice monitor. I haven't noticed it in other games so I'd say if you only play FPS games then maybe this monitor isn't for you.

There is a setting called Trace Free which is supposed to reduce ghosting but it doesn't seem to do anything.

Not a gamer myself, will have to try one sometime.
Very pleased with the monitor today, must be getting used to it.
Still havn't played with the settings, but have noticed that the colours are better than my previous monitor, seem to have more shades to them.
Viewing angle is very good too, although I always sit directly in front anyway.
Been doing some cad work this morning, lovely to do them with this monitor.

Hey again,

Cheers for the feedback, CAD etc isn't really my field of interest but that bf3 ghosting sounds like quite a shame because thats the only game I'll be playing for the forseeable future. Looks like its back to the drawing board for monitors then.

200-300 pound one that isnt this one, preferably 24 inches and visually an upgrade in size on a 22 inch one.

Hmmmmmmm

Got mine and have mixed feelings: mechanics are great, colors as well. Basically as I expected it to be. The screen has some leakage which is visible in dark scenes (e.g. the bibble toolbar, which is in dark grey) - not that bad, so I won't send it back, but even the cheapo TN-monitors form Asus friends of mine bought were better in this regard, so I am still disappointed. I guess, I'll have to keep up the pressure at work and buy the 24" one next year ;)

With regards to ghosting: I have been playing some MW2, CSS etc. and did not see any (overdrive on factory settings). I did not search for it either, i just played. Since I am not a hardcore gamer, this is fine for me. But maybe I would see a difference if I wouldn't have had IPS panels for the last 5 years or so.

thats a rather mixed review,so did you like it or not?

it cant be as bad as a TN given its IPS and going 24" wont change anything unless you going to spend £300+ maybe,

can you clarify what is actually wrong with it please.
I ask as i about to order one instead of the Dell UltraSharp U2312HM so would really like to know.
