My 1.6 feels underpowered, surely the 1.4 will be woeful?

Also....

1.4 42.8 MPG
1.6 40.9 MPG

Is sacrificing 25% of the power really worth the 4.4% increase in economy?

I can confirm that I average 41 MPG in the 1.6 and I'm not the easiest on the throttle by any stretch.
 
Having owned one as my first car, albeit a little newer, I wouldn't go with that and go with the Focus instead. They suffer from electrical problems and leaky sunroofs, and the economy for my 1.1 really wasn't that great, it felt slow too.

That's a Mk3 Fiesta, they stopped making them before the Clio the OP is looking at was even manufactured. Comparing it to the Mk4 would be rather more realistic.

I thought you used to drive a Cinquecento anyway? :D
 
err, that's a mk4/5, are they actually that dissimilar to a mk3 anyway though, apart from bolt on panels they look just the same to me.

That one is a 1997, so MK4 and the OP is looking at a 1999 Clio (which'll be a Clio II) :p

The thing with the Cinquecento, if I crashed that then I'd have been killed outright - not mangled up in it!

On topic, I wouldn't pay a grand for 1999 base Clio - it'll be a 1.2 8v at that age too.

Well abit of an update on this Clio, took it for a test drive yesterday all seems fine like clutch & gears everything worked as it should, so made her an offer of £800 for it as it was my sister money not mine, but the owner wouldn't budge she wanted 1k nothing less.

I told her you won't get a grand for this car, no matter how well you've looked after it, I've got £800 cash now to take it off your hands, otherwise you've fined it be sat here for a long time and if you try to sell it to a garage they give you 400-500 max with that i walked away but gave her my mobile just in case she changed her mind.
 
lol Skeeter you really don't like Clio's do ya, honestly the car worth £800 i've seen a lot a lot worst cars for that kind of price.
 
I owned an S Reg Clio for 6 years. If it's in absolute top nick, decent tyre tread, taxed and mot-ed for a fair while, why not go for it? I bought mine at 60k and if it was perfectly well behaved and fun to drive for 20k or so. Once I got to 100k things started to go a bit French and at 106k she got scrapped. :D

The only problem for me is that it's a 1.2. I owned a 1.4, and apparently the 1.2 is a trifle gutless and noisy in comparison.
