So where I work there are people of many cultures (me being one) and recently there was a notice on the walls saying soon everyone must talk in English, so no Polish, Hindi, French. So I was wondering is this infringing on our Human Rights at all before I make some hell at work?

Hey I tried reading the act but walls of text defeats me :O

EDIT: This isn't just about me but everyone I work with, isn't like a personal vendetta against my employer

Do you work in the UK? Is the primary speaking language at your work place English? If so, surely you should all be making an effort, in the interests of common courtesy, as well as working efficiency, to speak the same language? It really annoys me when my customers start talking in a different language in front of me however that is there prerogative, if a fellow colleague started sprouting out a different language I would politely ask them to refrain! You are in an English speaking country to work, not holiday, so speak English.

Having studied the HRA and ECHR in the past, being expected to speak English at work prima facie does not infringe your human rights as such. It might be another story if you were being prosecuted and were denied an interpreter to defend yourself, for example.

On another note, people who try it on with HR at the drop of a hat have done a lot of damage to the credibility of the Act and I think you should have a firm word with yourself.

To avoid potential race discrimination claims, employers should ensure that an English-only policy can be justified as being a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate business aim. Requiring employees to speak English to customers and colleagues in a work context will of course be justified, but employers will have a hard time justifying a blanket rule prohibiting casual conversations or conversations during break times in other languages.

What type of work do you do?

I dont see the issue with the company asking you to speak English it could be for any number of reasons.

If you want to speak Polish, Hindi or French in work, go to ****ing Poland, India or France to work. Simple. This is the UK, we speak English, Welsh and Gaelic here. If you don't like it **** OFF! Sick and tired of all the Political Correctness bull****.

When I work at our technical training centre in Lyon everything is conducted in English, the French love that :p

apparently most of the French/German Airbus lot can speak English for when you go there as they have just accepted the British are too lasy to learn French/German :p

Although i think it's because English is so vastly more complex than any other language we find it hard to speak in such primitive sounds :p

Normally I would have suggested trying to adopt the native tongue however, being a welsh rugby supporter I can safely say that I am all for inconveniencing the French!

When I worked with a French Moroccan Muslim, he was always asking us about the English language. We taught him what "up and down like a whore's drawers" meant and everything. And ********, too. ******** = bad. Dogs ******** = good. Great days.

Pft, the French should speak English out of gratitude. :p
