Looking to have a long weekend with some mates just camping and hopefully learning to surf with some lesssons.

We had heard about Bournemouth's artificial reef which was supposed to give decent waves but reading up on it today it seems to have been closed due to safety concerns :(

Where else is good for surfing? I've been to Newquay loads of times (not surfing though) so was looking for somewhere different. Or is Newquay the best place to guarantee decent waves?

I quite enjoyed surfing in Bude/Croyde when I was there a couple of years ago. There were plenty of surf schools ni the vacinity, though I didn't tale notice of any names.

I didn't particularly like Newquay (Fistral beach), just because of the town itself I guess - too many "essex gone to the beach" type morons about.

I started surfing back in the spring with a few mates, not gone too often but I've been to a few spots now. My mates taught me rather than taking lessons however.

Bude was pretty nice, few decent beaches around there if I remember correctly and as a place its nice. Newquey wasn't too bad, although when we went it was really busy.
I've also been to Woolacombe, which was very unforgiving the time we went - as the waves were 9-10' - Not good for a beginner, like Newquey it was really busy.

Most fun I've had was in Llangennith, Wales. Beach was nice and quiet so didn't have other people in the way :)

Been to croyde many times as a kid, great waves and good schools, and a damn nice ice cream parlour.

Something I'd quite like to get back into.

Ok maybe it wasn't that big, but it was much bigger than it usually is! Out back it was easily taller than guys stood up on their boards.

:D Biggest waves I've been in were about 6foot. Pretty intimidating when its nearly night time and your only ~4foot

I surf!

Can't really go wrong with anywhere on the North coast of Devon/Cornwall. Croyde, Bude, Newquay, Woolacombe and Westward Ho are the usual beach breaks people head to. Croyde might be worth a look as there's a couple of reasonable campsites right above the beach.

EDIT
Bah, just noticed the date. I guess you've already been!

Don't worry - wave size is actually quite a subjective thing.
When stood up and the wave is about head height, in my estimation that's only about 4 foot, if that.

My mates sent me a few pics of them tearing it up and I'm sick with jelousy, spurring this thread revival (it's my fault), I've been a bit homesick and gagging for a surf... so was scouring the web for anyone willing to talk surfing :p

Thought we might as well have one Surf thread, this seemed like a good place.

I haven't really got any pics of me surfing, just a couple

Surfing (what I consider 4ft) waves on my wedding day - Brother in law and I decided to go and shred it in stead of getting ready - crappy sequence at the end of a wave and didnt get me exit the barrel - but hey, it's something :p

You evidently measure waves in a very different way to me! :p lol
Sadly the flickr pics aren't loading for me so I can't see them in relation to your post.
Some great shots further down though. Makes me want to try and get some pics of people surfing :)

Do want to try short boarding some time. Only used 2 different long boards so far belonging to my mates. One is a boat that anyone could stand up on easily and barely turns. The other one is nice though :D

Get yourself a sizey fish for an easier transition. Jumping down to a shortboard can be a bit of a shock. I went straight from an 8ft foamy to a 6ft shortboard and didn't actually stand on the face of the wave for the first few times I went out.

Old post, but I thought i'd bump it up (I'm new and all that).

I went out to South Africa/Mozambique with the TTRide guys that were previously linked.
Haven't surfed in a bout a year now though. Really got itchy feet to get back on the water just shamefully I work too hard at the moment and don't live near a decent break.

But for the 4 months I traveled I was out every day in some pretty sweet waves. I'd still say i'm relatively amateur though as I don't get the chance to do it regularly enough. But it is most definitely the best sport, period, hah.

Got me 3 boards too (one I shaped myself but surfs like ****), although the lady makes me keep them stored away :(
