I just ordered a £5,000 watch online, I tipped the royal mail delivery guy £500 when it arrived as I was told by society to always tip at least 10% and its all I had on me. He has a hard job, is underpaid, on his feet all day busting his back to get people their mail (which is very important). Should I have tipped more?

So did i do the right thing? How much do you guys tip your delivery man? Do you always tip your waiter/waitress too? If so, how much and why?

(Disclaimer the above story is not true, I would like to see peoples opinions and why some people deserve to be tipped yet not others)

I've never tipped a postman before, although I usually tip in restaurants providing the level of service is deserving of it.

I tip at the hairdressers and at a resteraunt if the service at both is good.
If its poor they get nothing, the tip depends on how good the service is.

The delivery man does not get tipped as he does not work cash in hand and will have other benefits as the others listed above will not.

why do you tip in restaurants and not anywhere else?

do you not think a person who delivers you your parcels in the rain, snow or hail, deserves to be tipped? yet someone who delivers you your food in a nice warm building deserves so.

do you think you came up with this belief yourself or do you think it was pressed upon you by society?

Either you've won an insane amount of money on the lottery or you are clearly demented. £500 to a postie to do his job???? Seriously WTF???!?!?

I tip between 15-20% is resturants. But thats the norm in the USA. No-one ever tips the postman.

I'd tip someone if they say come around and do some work around my house, like deliver a sofa, and take care and attention of my property.

I had a guy do some crown molding in my digs, he ran up and down my stairs at least 100 to 200 times, making the cuts out in the garage.. He took his shoes off every time, cos he knew I was a fussy git, and my house was brand new.

He got a $200 tip.

it varies between industries quite a lot, your example in the OP isn't really suitable, tipping the watch company would be correct in your scenario, you'd tip the postie relative to the cost of the postage.
A tip should only be for exceptional service in the UK, for continuous service things like post, milkman, paperboy it's common to tip at xmas, presumably to ensure continued good service for the following year!

I don't tip,

It does not sit well for me to subsidize the profits of a business because they can't be bothered to pay the staff a decent wage.

Many people who take these jobs (which require tips to be worthwhile) are almost working for free for the employers.

I'm talking about the USA mostly here, as here in the UK we don't have a tipping culture.

Tipping a postman??/..**** that, i mean ill tip a waiter or waitress no problem but other than those 2...ermm no i wouldnt.

It really goes to show people don't read OP's properly when people are questioning if it's real/serious when this was at the bottom

I tip in restaurants if the service has been good, usually around 10%. Also generally tip takeaway delivery drivers, but its just the change rounded up so if its £13.50 ill give £15 and they keep the rest.
