Hi guys, currently running

Core 2 Duo e6420 @ 3.48 Ghz on air
4GB RAM
ATI Radeon 5870 1GB

wondering what suggestions are with regards to CPU/RAM/Motherboard upgrade around or a few months after christmas. I've been out of the loop for ages and would like some advice if i should wait for IvyBridge (is that coming out soon ?)

Mainly upgrading for the next 3-4 years and to play BF3 on a 1680x1050 as best as possible.

The GPU is around 3 months old and is the newest part of the computer.

Not quite sure what motherboard/cpu/ram combo to go for, really want to overclock aswell :) possibly with antec kuhler watercooling thing.

All for around £350 (£400 at a stretch)

thanks guys really appreciate the advice on here

Considering you are running a 5870 and I still rate mine, If it was me, I would get a 2500k, mobo and 4-8Gb of ram.

For 2011+ pc games your going to need a much beefier cpu.

yeap, thinking the same, but will the current cpu prices be slashed soon due to some new revisions coming out???? im clueless and way behind on the news about new tech. Would it be worth waiting a while ? if Ivybridge is out march i could wait till then

Doubt there'll be much of a drop in cpu prices anytime soon.

Bulldozers floppiness didn't help :)

I'd go with the aforementioned option of Sandy :)

Ok, no idea what all these motherboard chipsets are for, why are there so many different types for the same chips ? any recommendation ?

or what about upgrrading to a Q6600 or better

I have a GA-965P-DS3 currently and that can take anything up to a Yorkfield Core™ 2 Quad Q9650.....perhaps if I got a quad core and over clocked that i could hold out for another year or so ???

Yes, this is possible, but I wouldnt get a Q6600, too old now. A Q9650 might do good enough....

My cpu in sig, is still cutting it.

But way up the price of against getting a SB/mobo etc....

I still reckon your be better of just going 2500k.

I put this together last night:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-080-OE

and I am amazed at the results!

However I did upgrade from a DDR2 AMD 7850 system (which lasted me well).

I was holding out for Bulldozer - but the Sandybridge I'm very happy with.

I only had a chance to quickly test Dead Island which was running using around 75% of the CPU compared now to 25% of the CPU with a bucket more FPS whilst running at 30 degrees :)

Only got it setup late last night so will try out the obligatory Crysis, Metro, Bad Company 2 later (non of which I have really played as they were crying out for an upgrade...)

So looking at your setup, I would recommend the bundle.

You can get the bundle cheaper if you buy it all seperately. You may only save a few £'s but it all helps.

If I was to purchase a cheap Quad to tie me over for a while longer, which would be the best Yorkfield to get for overclocking from this list

Overclocking will be limited by your current motherboard, rather than the CPU.

To be honest, you only realistic options are either go cheap and get a 2nd Q6600 for £50, which would probably hit 3.0GHz on your current board, or just go all out and upgrade to the SandyBridge platform.

I have the same bundle and what an increase it is over my amd 955be system which was still servicable. I think that bundle is good but the as5 wasnt to good with temps so had to use some mx2
