ATI Radeon HD 5800 cooler

I have the Zalman VF3000 on my 5850 which does a great job, but I think there may be cheaper alternatives out there.

It shouldn't overheat if you have decent airflow inside your case.

Have you given the cooler a good clean to get rid of accumulated dust, fluff etc.?

Cool, I'll look around. Those seem a little pricey really.

I have cleaned it out. It's fairly new although I suppose the dust accumulated quite quickly. It was a bit dodgy when I bought it for some reason and I'm stuck with it. The VRAM seems to mess up if you've been running it for a long time. If you restart it then is problematic and I have to wait for a bit for it to cool down before starting up again. I would like to get a cooler as I want it to be as cool in there as possible. I'm running about 8 fans but I'm not really sure what to do with airflow.

You can see the temps here.

You should give your current gpu's fan a good clean, as believe it or not, dust/fluff can actually increase temps by a fair amount. If that doesn't solve it then look to be buying a 3rd party cooler. Although it does invalidate your warranty (removing the cards stock cooler)

I can recommend this cooler does a great job on my 470.:)

Thanks dude. I'd like one but it's too expensive.

I don't have a warranty on it so that's not a problem. I'll have a look at the dust situation, cheers.

is that 56.C at idle or load?
my hd5850 gets to 55-59.C running bad company 2.

i had to change the fan also, i just changed it for a stock fan off a hd4890, but i did some research into the different coolers.

an accelero S1 fits with a slight mod.

or a Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo Pro, again with a slight mod.

and finally, various ones mentioned in this thread

and for air direction its a bit OTT, but

Thanks for that info j.col. I've cleaned out my fan and it's running 10 degress lower now, at about 60C idle. I think I need to replace the thermal paste on the heatsink though. I've also followed that diagram for airflow so I think that'll help.

I've got a problem now, though, where, if I run Minecraft and a minecraft server (both java applications) the computer freezes and I have to power it down. Its a i5 2500K on a z68 pro motherboard. My graphics card may well be a little dodgy though. This issue only appeared in the last couple of days though so has anyone got any recommendations?

60 idle is ridiculous. TBH, that's grounds by itself to RMA.

was it bought from OcUK?
RMA turnaround time for XFX is just shy of 30days. Good luck :(

I've got no warranty on it unfortunately.

I think the issue now may well be the thermal paste...I've just ordered some more. When I cleaned the fan I, stupidly, took the heatsink off without thinking, messing the thermal compound up. I would still like to replace the standard cooler but I can't really afford it...thermal paste is a lot cheaper!

Dual cards means the clock speeds will be very high for idle.

For example my 6950 runs at 250/150 with one monitor connected. If I enable my second monitor (TV) it pops up to 450/1250. That's double the clock speed on the GPU and TEN times the clock speed on the RAM. It added about 20 degrees in temps and 50W power draw too, even when the TV is off. This is why I use Ultramon to switch monitors when I want to watch the PC on the TV.

I do have two monitors running. Do you think that would produce SUCH high temperatures though? The poor thermal paste could also be an issue.

Oh yes! If you are running TWO monitors from ONE card then your temps are FINE.

If you only run one monitor the idle temp will drop to around 40°C

This is due to the cards clock speeds is higher when running two screens. Paste is fine.

I'm currently watching youtube in HD on one screen and I've got Chrome with a few tabs up on the other and my temp is 43C. How does that sound? I replaced the thermal paste and I think it has actually dropped the temp by a couple of degrees!
