There's a thread loosely about this in General Hardware, but I know not a lot of people go from GD to there.

Basically, prices are expected to double / triple in the next month or two, due to plant closures etc etc.

Is the market for storage really that vast, that all stockpiles will be exhausted and prices will skyrocket?

My new build is out the window now... :(

If there is a thread then post the link and people can head off back in General Hardware where they belong.

It's something to do with flooding in Bangcock (how's that spelt?). We got a message of our suppliers today trying to flog us drives as they're going to run out. We'll take out chances I think.

That's stupid. They're always quick to raise prices if there's any excuse, but it takes months, if not years for a reduction in the cost of manufacturing to filter down to the consumer.

It's not really the end of the world is it, prices were obscenely low, I mean 2Tb drives for under 50 quid? So it's not a deal breaker if you suddenly need to pay 90 quid for a 2Tb drive instead of £50 is it?

Everyone is acting like its the apocolypse, I've even seen quotes that storage will be 'unaffordable'. Come on! Most of us paid £100+ for 60gb drives in the past...

£80 ~ for a 500gb hard drive when they were around the £30 mark!

When doing builds most of the cost is going to be on the hard drives now :(

Can't say I've seen anything about Thailand flooding on the news - the price of HDDs is the only way I know about it!

What usually is the time lag between Western Digital making a hard drive in Thailand and it being on OcUK's shelf?
I guess WD make it, then it goes on a slow boat from Thailand to a distributor in the UK, then it goes by truck to OcUK, and then OcUK sell it to us. A couple of weeks total?

LOL @ all the companies raising their prices obscenely.

No one is going to be selling any hard drives for a while - if that's a large chunk of your business, why is it such a bad thing to up your margin on the last items you have, to help carry you through a long time where you'll be making nothing at all?

Supply and demand.
