Hard drive prices - for those that don't go into General Hardware

Does this apply to external HDDs as well?

Yes as they use internal drives in a nice looking external housing/interface.
I'd be amazed if it doesn't also affect the price of PVR's (Sky+, V+, Tivo, freeview PVR's etc), HDD based mp3 players etc.

Basically everything with a hard drive is going to be affected.

Depends on their turnover of stock. If they are small, and shift low levels of stock, they will not be likely to need to order new stock until the manufacturers have started producing again. OcUk sell units in their thousands and it is the replacement stock which is costing more.

they are one of the biggest in the country. bigger than ocuk i think.

Back when I built one of my first rigs the price of RAM was insane.

I paid the best part of £250 for 2 gigs of Corsair XMS6400 800mhz DDR2 (from memory).

Now you can get 4gb or 6gb kits of much faster DDR3 RAM for about a third of that.

It's all swings and roundabouts with hardware.

Why exactly should prices go up just because theres a more limited supply for a while?

They should cost no more than usual and if they run out then they run out, simple, they will use any excuse to make an extra profit at our expense though won't they?

the problem is all this "panic spreading" is meaning people are buying drives because they now all of a sudden appear a good deal. The best solution is to just not buy if you dont absolutely need one.

Why exactly should prices go up just because theres a more limited supply for a while?

Because thats the basic principle of the law of supply and demand?

They should cost no more than usual and if they run out then they will run out, simple

Why would anyone price a product like that? If you have more demand than supply then price rises to the point where demand and supply are equal

they will use any excuse to make an extra profit at our expense though won't they?

Well that kinda is the point in a private company?

Are you another one of these nutjob anti-everything people?

Are you really saying you don't understand supply and demand? Back to school for you.

The question was to make a point, of course i know about supply and demand, that doesn't mean it's right, it's nothing more than taking advantage of a situation for profit, the way things should be is if they run out then they run out, you make more, simple. :)
