**The Official Nokia Lumia 800 Thread***

I guess. Just tried Whatsapp, pretty cool. Out of 112 contacts it's managed to find 2 who actually use the app. I must say, the set-up process was slick though :) I've been avoiding Whatsapp because I just assumed it'd be similar to Fring or IM+ (i.e. unreliable and buggy on almost every platform. Regular crashes and undelivered messages) but from the 5 minutes I've had with it I'm liking what I'm seeing :)

I have to admit I've never used it, however I have several friends that do and it makes far more sense to use (unless you are a bit of a ***) than a proprietary single OS chat program.

It's the same size as the HTC Desire screen and you can see the difference in text quality between the SLCD and AMOLED screens on that, I had both and the SLCD was much better for reading small text in a web browser.

But then again the actual screen quality for everything else is miles ahead of the SLCD that HTC use (from the friends phones I've used).

Honest question, is there a need for these messaging apps when we all have either massive or unlimited texts in the UK anyway? it just seems like another complication.

Tried to point this out to two friends using BBM to message each other (over time, not in the same room or anything! lol) when they both had unlimited texts, just seems pointless to me.

Regarding the phone:
My GF's sister's response was "Oh wow, its pink!"

From that reaction i can tell Nokia are onto a winner heh

Before i had BBM i had texts etc, could not for the life of me see the fuss over BBM and its differences, so i bought one to find out. It's hard to describe how its different! Much more "conversational" I'd say is the best way.

WP7 is really tempting, i'm liking the tiles idea and the browser looks decent.

I'm just worried about the app world, and how easy is music transfered? Simple drag and drop i presume?

Yeah there's a ton of reasons to use whatsapp:

No Char limit, group mode, sends internationally instantly (there are huge delays between network types around the world), receive reports, server receive reports, pictures arn't compressed and work well, can send most types of media, interface is well thought out, consistent on each OS with the same look and feel.

Off the main topic but talking about messaging apps I didn't bother with the like of whatsapp because they lacked the critical mass of people to make them worthwhile. What I have found really good is the Facebook Messenger, because all your friends are already effectively on it, you get the push notifications, groups chats and you don't need to be on your phone to see updates.

Why? Is this the whole hardware top trumps game again? Just because it doesn't need it doesn't mean it's worse...:p

Because he's not gaining anything from moving from a sgs2 unless he particulary likes wp7 or the look of the phone.

possibly...it's a difficult choice....6% is still pretty pathetic though don't you think? I'm not knocking WP7 but for a paltry 6% share I'd be gunning for somebody's ass on a plate...

It all depends how they measure it.

I would expect that of current phones (smart or not) Symbian still have a massive market share.

Many of these reports only measure percentage of sales over 3 months.

That is not current market share. Just share of current sales.

6% isn't a huge amount, but if the total universe for smart phones is say 500million, 6% is 30m devices so still a nice chunk of change.

On a seperate note, this doesn't have OVI maps, but instead has DRIVE which it accesses i guess via the browser (HTML5) so that's a bit pants.

Yeah, that is true..still seems such a low figure when most people rave about it. It really should be a lot higher, and highlights how Microsoft have fallen so far behind what people perceive. I'm still guessing this is the last throw of the smartphone dice for Nokia and Microsoft though, if this doesn't work they will both quit the market for smartphones...

what if I am on a website, I have a patch with my pre that if I click a link for an mp3, such as a podcast, I can choose to download it or stream. Is there that ability? If not can it still download and allow playback?

True, it's a huge step down for performance and features... but he might not use them all fully and it look's so darn good! (I'm talking full on sexy hardware here, only the SE Ray gets close for a phone running Android)

 Yes there is! Go to contact, edit mode, choose mobile no, hold on the input field for a second and you get a cursor to precision select where to place it. I think this applies to any text/number input field in WP7

That didn't work in the phone number field no matter how long I held down :( maybe a bug?
Actually, can you add a custom name to the phone number? (instead of the usual mobile, home etc) I didn't find a option for this? (If you can I might need a full reset after the Mango update)

This phone would not be a "huge step down in (real world) performance" compared to the Galaxy S II. My Omnia 7 isn't far behind the Galaxy S II at all, most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference in truth.

I have to laugh at Nokia though, how did they not realise that 'Lumia' means 'Whore' in Spanish?

It wouldn't be the first time a phone had different names in different markets and I don't think it'll be that huge of a dealbreaker for most people in the UK.
