Hello, perhaps someone can help me with this.

I can see that the TV prices in USA are significantly cheaper than those in UK and I was thinking that it might be cost efficient to purchase one from abroad.

Anyone has any idea how much the duty+tax+vat would be on a TV imported from USA? I have searched the revenue&customs website and found the tax code, but can't find the specifics on the % that I will have to pay over its original price.

For example, the 64d8000 Sammy is ~2,000 GBP (inc. of 2 pairs 3d glasses and bluray player) in USA while it's 2,800 in UK (inc. 1 pair of 3d glasses).

EDIT: Even the Panasonic P65VT30 is the same price as above, which is 4,000 GBP in UK (!)

Coupled with the shipping costs of at a guess several hundred (can't imagine this could go by air unless on special pallet) + duty + charges and lack of warranty, it can't be worth it. #

Would powwer not be an issue also, with it being a 120v supply for the states Vs a 240v over here? not sure they do an auto switching power supply in these units.

shop around

first google link give you the 64d800 at £2359 with a five year warranty :)
certainly better than £2800 and more likely cheaper than importing and less hassle

US TV:

120V (needs a step down transformer)
American SD & HD TV tuners
No UK warranty support
...and you'll be keeping this TV forever because it has very little s/h value being a non-European set

By all means go ahead, but don't come crying here if/when it all goes horribly wrong.

The duty is 14% and you'll pay VAT (20%) on the cost of the goods, the shipping and the cost of the duty...a tax on a tax.

was worth it for electronics back in 70s and 80s, really no point buying TVs etc... from US nowadays to save money, unless you have a specific need for one.

as above - pay the UK price - simple.

Can't even begin to imagine the shipping costs for a 64" TV from the US let alone the VAT and customs duty that would be payable!
