Seen it on another forum. Find it hard to believe tbh.

Sixteen things Libya will never see again...

1. There is no electricity bill in Libya; electricity is free for all its citizens.

2. There is no interest on loans, banks in Libya are state-owned and loans given to all its citizens at zero percent interest by law.

3. Having a home considered a human right in Libya.

4. All newlyweds in Libya receive $60,000 dinar (U.S.$50,000) by the government to buy their first apartment so to help start up the family.

5. Education and medical treatments are free in Libya. Before Gaddafi only 25 percent of Libyans were literate. Today, the figure is 83 percent.

6. Should Libyans want to take up farming career, they would receive farming land, a farming house, equipments, seeds and livestock to kickstart their farms are all for free.

7. If Libyans cannot find the education or medical facilities they need, the government funds them to go abroad, for it is not only paid for, but they get a U.S.$2,300/month for accommodation and car allowance.

8. If a Libyan buys a car, the government subsidizes 50 percent of the price.

9. The price of petrol in Libya is $0.14 per liter.

10. Libya has no external debt and its reserves amounting to $150 billion are now frozen globally.

11. If a Libyan is unable to get employment after graduation the state would pay the average salary of the profession, as if he or she is employed, until employment is found.

12. A portion of every Libyan oil sale is credited directly to the bank accounts of all Libyan citizens.

13. A mother who gives birth to a child receive U.S.$5,000.

14. 40 loaves of bread in Libya costs $0.15.

15. 25 percent of Libyans have a university degree.

16. Gaddafi carried out the world’s largest irrigation project, known as the Great Manmade River project, to make water readily available throughout the desert country.

Hmmmm, sometimes evil dictators make good leaders in some ways, but I doubt all of these are true, and if they were, they wouldn't be got rid of

I was watching something on iPlayer a while back and they were doing a feature on this, it was a BBC Doc from the late 70's and the praise Gaddafi was getting for the way he was treating the Libyans and how their lives had been turned around under his Rule was quite staggering.

He was also until very recently on very good terms with 'The West', scary how things can turn around on the whim of Politics :)

Enjoy your hat.

Erm...

You know the IRA got most of their weapons from him? And the lockerbie bombing was Libya? He has absolutely not been on good terms with the west. The USA bombed Libya ages ago in 1986 in response to a terror attack.

Gaddafi certainly had the money to do most/all of that. His treasures and assets that have been occupied and found since his death have been said to have made him one of the wealthiest people on the planet, his true "value" wasn't known until now.

I was reading about it on News Republic at lunch the other day.

Can you imagine if they gave 60k to every newly wed couple here.

You wouldn't be able to get a foot in a church!! Especially with our freeloading society.

Probably false but Saddam kept all the insurgents in check in Iraq, when he was taken out, all hell broke loose.

Libya is in a dangerous situation.

The petrol price is probably true.

My uncle lives and works in Saudi Arabia. He said recently premium unleaded is equivalent to about 3p per litre. Normal unleaded is about 2p per litre. Diesel - less than 1p per litre.

All of that changes makes it okay that he killed peaceful protesters and put any kind of opposition into prison /torture/ simply murder?

I really don't like this trend of people copy and pasting this set of puff as if it matters.

Oil thing is related to other arabic countries, in sauidi arabia they pay people for sucking oil out of "peoples" land. They also make a deposit for new babies yes.

Interest rate are haram under the islamic law (which they get around by various fees).

You must understand by lybians this set of farce does not mean all citizens, it simply means the cream top his tribesmen, those loyal to him.

Few were living in luxury while others were oppressed.

I'm guessing this is a mixture of truths, half-truths and lies.

Before we get all teary-eyed over Libya, let's review the current state of her economy:

Although no reliable estimates are available, unemployment is reportedly acute: over 50% of the population under the age of 20. Moreover, despite the bias of labor market regulations favoring Libyan workers, the mismatch of the educational system with market demand has produced a large pool of expatriate workers, with typically better-suited education and higher productivity.

However, because of shortages for manual labor, Libya has also attracted important numbers of less skilled immigrants. Expatriate workers represent an estimated fifth of the labor force.

(Source).

>50% unemployment and 25% of all workers are immigrants. Good times?

Human rights:

Some of the numerous and serious abuses on the part of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya government included poor prison conditions, arbitrary arrest and prisoners held incommunicado, and political prisoners held for many years without charge or trial. The judiciary was controlled by the government, and there was no right to a fair public trial.

Libyans have been lacking a clear and democratic method to change their government. Freedom of speech, press, assembly, association, and religion were restricted under the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya government. Independent human rights organisations were prohibited. Ethnic and tribal minorities suffer discrimination, and the state continues to restrict the labor rights of foreign jobs.

(Source).

Demographics:

Libya is home to a large illegal population which numbers more than one million, mostly Egyptians and Sub-Saharan Africans.

(Source).

Yes that's right, Libya has 1 million illegal immigrants in a population of 6.6 million people!

I'm not seeing an African wonderland here.
