Frozen Planet 9pm BBC1/BBC1HD

A truly beautiful show (as all BBC nature documentary series seem to be). Even amongst so many gems, the stand-out moment for me was when those Gentoo penguins were on the beach looking out to sea and a wave rolls up and just for a few seconds you can clearly see the shape of a sealion lurking just off shore. That genuinely raised hairs on the back of my neck.
Already gagging to watch the next episode.

I've actually been in a situation like this. Whilst in the Falklands I visited a penguin colony. I sat a short distance away from them as they came down to the beach to feed (actually got very short as peguins are very curious and will wander over and check you out if you keep still enough).

I could see they were reluctant to go in and thats when I noticed the leopard seal patrolling the shoreline. It was facinating watching it chase after them when they did dive in.

As first mentioned in Tanks post, a lot of times when the BBC do these spectacular series they give the Open University advance warning and sometimes they produce short courses on them which can be put towards a degree.

They have done it for the Blue Planet and Planet Earth. They have also done one on this series.

I'm starting it in either Nov or Feb :)

Awesome pics dude but are you sure that's a Leopard seal? Looks more like a sealion to me.

was quality, took something like 4 years to film didnt it?

wouldnt expect no less from attenborough!

Justed watched this on i-player. Fascinating and stunning photography and Sir David could make watching paint dry sound interesting. The two matched together create some of the most brilliant programmes ever released imho.

Great programme. I made a deal that if we could watch this then I had to watch The Only Way Is Essex. Frozen Planet was so good it made it worthwhile!

The final bit of the programme, where they show how they make it, is a great addition. Very interesting and you can tell the crew have lots of fun and passion doing what they do.

So jealous, me and my women are huge penguin fans and hope to go to the Falklands and even Antarctica one day..

Odd thing in your first photo though, the beach of gentoos.. Looks like one african penguin laying down there  Surely a bit lost? Doesn't look like a Gentoo at all!

Loved frozen planet, so glad we got a new tv for the HD box :)

You might be right, I did see both there and it was a few years ago.

The odd one out is a Magellan penguin, the ones that nest in burrows. There are at least 5 species of penguins on the Falklands.

It is a truly amazing place if you like wildlife as most of the species have no fear of man. In the UK if I want to get a photo of a plover I need a very long telephoto lens and a lot of patience. In the Falklands I had a pair run between my legs on a beach and one sitting on my foot!

Think this will be my first blu-ray purchase. Planet Earth, Nature's Great Events and Life all well worth a watch. Nothing beats the BBS Natural History team. They should all be part of the national curriculum.

EDIT: Favourite part was the killer whales making waves to catch that poor seal. Simply breathtaking.

Yep, stunning documentary at its best. I salute you Sir Attenborough. Now thats how you earn a knighthood Brucie!

Watched this on i-player hd the other night. Love these bbc series, beautifully shot, the sequence showing the ********** was fantastic. A definite purchase on blu ray when its released.
