I am looking at getting another car as I need to be able to carry family around now. I dont have a lot to spend or a lot of time to shop and have found two potential cars.

Car number 1.

Love the model and the colour of this one, similar performance to my Clio 172 although will probably use a bit more fuel.

Car number 2.

Sensible car, will use a lot less fuel and be more comfortable. Is a diesel though and has done a lot of miles.

I don't know a massive amount about either of these two engines. Will the PD130 engine in the Passat last for much longer? How reliable is the 20VT engine? Can anyone give me an idea on how much these cars cost in day to day running? I will probably do around 15-20k miles in the next year, mostly personal.

I can't for the life of me think why your shortlist would come down to these two.

If you want a diesel saloon get the Passat, if you want a turbo hatch get the Leon.

Not sure what else we can say, have you also thought about a Citroën Berlingo?

Budget of 2K - carting Family around

Ford Focus 1.4-2.0 petrol or MK4/MK5 Astra.

You will find one with 60-80k miles on the clock and it will be much cheaper to run than the two you have identified.

Focus would be my choice

What you really want is one of these:

low maintainance, cheap on fuel and lets be honest you would look the don!

But seriously, neither of those cars strike me as a cheap run about.

I too believe the 530i M Sport, a model first introduced not until the e60, sucks the big one.

Oh no, I have been owned by my lack of BMW "sport" knowledge

Or just the 530i "sport" + M stickers champaign cocktail what ever edition.

Either way RX8 owns

The 180 Cupra is a good car, very quick with a remap shows up a lot of performance cars and a bit of sleeper, the remap seemed to make no difference to fuel consumption, my mate used to get around 30mpg out of his if he was sensible but on spirited drives it did guzzle, pretty typical for that engine

I think so, better than any steak i've ever tasted.

You have never been to the Hawksmoor

Confirm/Deny?

Thanks for the advice. I do know the cars are different and generally wouldnt be looked at by the same person but there are reasons for that.

The Leon idea comes from needed to cart family around but also wanting something that will go when I put my foot down and the Passat was a (potentially) more sensible option.

Can anyone tell me anything about the PD130 engine?
