No the 3 series convertible is... A convertible :p

But a Fiat 500C is a convertible also!

So a Fiat 500C would be hatchback convertible whereas a 3 series convertibel would be either

a) convertible coupe - because of the coupe shape
b) convertible hatchback - as it has more than 3 "doors" and the cabin can be accessed with out using the 2 front doors.

I guess I am basing off the shape rather than the door count.

Meh. How do VW get away with calling the Scirocco a coupe when it is a hatch? And same for the Megane RS coupe?

By the "rule" ONLY 2 doors, they are not coupes but hatches.

Yet a hatchback Corsa looks nothing like a Supra yet they share the same body type "hatchback".

I feel dirty :(

The Scirocco was historically more coupe in shape with the lower profile roof and the new one does look squished.

I have produced a drawing showing my perception of a coupe compared to a hatch.

Woah woah woah

The 3 series convertible does not have a hatch at the back, therefore it is not a hatchback.

Jesus H Christ, pull yourself together. You'll be arguing the mx-5/z4r/boxster etc are hatchbacks next...

I think the big problem is that whereas hatchback is a relatively recent term coupé has been around for over a hundred years and means different things to different manufacturers.

Is that what equals a 3rd door? I was genuinely wondering that.

Bare in mind that some cars have a ski hatch, a small child could fit through with some effort, what would that then equal?

Bet the OP wasn't expecting this, he will be so enlightened about the intricacies of the Integra now!

Another post firmly displaying your lack of understanding on this crucial issue.

Your hatchback profile matches neither of the two hatchbacks I have owned.

The term 'hatchback' has nothing to do with profile. It does not mean a car with a steep back and a tall rear. It means, staggering, a car with a hatch back. Strange that the most literal name in car design is causing so many so much trouble.

If the car has a hatch back - ie, the rear lifts like a hatch and the rear window goes with it, it is a hatchback irrespective of what the brochure calls it.

Yes, this means that technically even an Aston Martin V8 Vantage is a hatchback and that a Honda Civic Coupe is more of a Coupe than a Porsche Cayman.

TUNE IN NEXT, HERE IN MOTORS, FOR THE OBVIOUS FOLLOWUP ARGUEMENT - 'So that means an Estate is a hatchback then'.

If the 500 roof was up you wont get into the cabin through the trunk opening = not hatchback.

But isn't that a rear door not a hatch? (genuine question, not a joke, this is confusing).

It is not ingress/egress to a seating position (in most estates) so its no different to a hatchback.

The MG ZS for example had 4 door and 5 door variants. One Saloon the other a hatchback.

What and my coupe profile is bang on:eek::D? That is pretty much the profile of a Hyundai Coupe and roof although not front profile of a MK4 Golf (dotted line) imo:p. My MS Paint Skillz must be through the roof for you to call me on this diagram so do I take this as a compliment?

National gallery here I come….

I know he will be so pleased!

What is a hatch?

Exactly, the folding roof is a hatch.

There will be no argument. They all have "hatchs" maybe not at the back, I will call these - hatch tops.

Wait so a hatch top is a convertible :p

Great. So what? Because a Mk4 Golf has that profile you think every hatch does? Why not draw the profile of a Mondeo?

Exactly, the folding roof is a hatch.

What? How do you come to that conclusion? It's not a hatch at all, it's an electrically folding roof. It doesn't even fit the definition of the word 'hatchback'.

Dictionary says:

a style of automobile in whichthe rear deck lid and window lift open as a unit.

No convertible fits this. All hatchbacks fit this.

A car with no hatch at the back is not a hatchback... this is pretty simple stuff here :P

No, really, its not :p
