Hi i have the MSI GTX 580 Twin Frozr II and when running Battlefield 3 on high for a couple of hours my temps get between 80-85 degrees, i was wondering if this is normal or too hot, i have the card set as it came and have not overclocked it.

thanks

MSI are rubbish at applying thermal paste to these cards.

Remove the cooler, clean off the thermal paste and add two strips of MX3 / MX4 1/3 of the way from the top and bottom of the GPU.

The GPU temp will then drop by anything from around 4-10 degrees.

i have 1 of them cards and i have set a fan profile in msi after burner and my temps never go above 65...

thats playing bf3 for hours on end...

Set case side fan to exhaust if you have one. You need your case to have negative pressure inside of it with cards with coolers that dump heat in the case, to ensure all warm air is removed and not getting recycled through your cards fans.

My 580 Twin Frozer 2 runs at about 75c at 1100mv and clocks of 900mhz for reference.

Well I only have the one chassis case fan in the front of my case aswell as the cpu and power fans. So I could get another case fan just to take the edge off.
Trouble is i only have a 600w power supply and I think im at the limit.
Heres my specs:

Intel Core i7 960 3.20GHz @ 4.00GHz Quad Core
OcUK H2 Flo Extreme CPU Cooler
Intel X58 DDR3 Motherboard
6GB DDR3 RAM
MSI GTX 580 Twin Frozr II
Corsair 600W power supply

Will I be good getting an extra fan or will i have to upgrade my power supply aswell.

Thanks for all the help guys, and fast replies. Much appreciated.:)

Get yourself MSI afterburner and set a custom fan profile, works a treat.

Try something like this:

7QH5

You'd have enough juice for another fan, they don't draw much - but if it's to help reduce gpu temps then I wouldn't bother

80-85 is pretty normal for a 580. They get quite warm :)

yeah thats what i use cracking little program.

tho i have mine steeper than that.

i have this card in sli now and it still doesnt go above 65/66...

It is indeed good - I'm interested in seeing what fan profile you have to maintain 65C, especially given that your running 580s in SLI.

With the graph plots I have, BF3 sits between 70-73C @ ~75% fan speed.

Anything above 80C is a no-no for me, it just doesn't feel right to let my card get that hot.

I would say that your temps are normal, if your temps start getting near the 90s, then i would be concerned.

I have 2 MSI 580s and they run really cool, better than my reference 580.

GPU1 = 76
GPU2 = 81

I have these cards in SLI and don't see temps going above 65-70 ish and that is with the default fan profile. I have a HAF X case and a decent gap between the cards (using PCIe slots 1 and 3 if you know what I mean) which makes all the difference I think. Idle is low to mid 30's.

ill sort out some screens when i can pull myself away from bf3 lol.

forgot to add im using a antec df-85 case with 8 fans 1 of which is on the side of the case blowing directly on the gpu's...
