£75Bn to invest what would you do

Build a lot of houses as above, finish the motorway network and clear up some of the road bottlenecks, replace Heathrow with something suitable between Birmingham and London, put some proper metro lines in places other than London, speed up HS2, and, in the unlikely event that there is some change from that, build an excess number of nuclear plants and a power line to Germany so we can sell the electricity to them when their ones close.

You just spent trillions. 75billion would get you a few nuclear power plants. Not even enough for us, let alone others.

Would pay for the entire research and development on the Skylon space plane. So we can be world leaders by a massive margin in the space industry.
Invest the rest, reopening closed train stations and encrougimg green tech research and manufacturing.
Probably wouldn't be enough though.
Build an Eco city in partnership with industries for research and manufacturing of the green tech. As well as lots of selfbuild plots.

I agree with this, almost forgot about the Skylon engine...

No social housing, this tends to be better handled by private sector. Just make planning easier, housing companies are already profitable and probably want more land. As supply goes up, price goes down.

Government should only interfere in places where no one else wants to put their capital. So infrastructure, Big R&D projects etc.

The problem with tax cuts, is that people are more likely to save not spend it. But when you give people money they are more likely to spend it. Psychology huh.

You might attract companies with tax cuts trying to conserve wealth, but I doubt it's value on the consumer side.

I dunno, the VAT is way too high for me personally...kinda made me annoyed.

Invest in eco-friendly power generation(solar, tidal etc.) plus replace large amounts of copper wiring with fibre optic(Sell the copper to make some of the money back) and the lead pipes we use for water etc. with something modern and better(again sell the lead to help pay for it)

Take the money and r.....

Oh wait I'm the government, thats not fun

75bil I'd use the money to buy the company who fired my last year, then fire all the the idiots and keep the smart ones

Damn beaten to it...

I would probably invest in a way to be able to give my citizens free energy and hot water even I had to bankrupt greedy energy companies to do it.

could you not just set up huge solar farms on green belt land? or install solar panels onto the roofs of every new built home as standard and give the option to any suitable already made home?

then use the electricity generated to heat water as well as power homes?

pretty sure for £75 billion you would get a huge bulk discount on panels.

Even better if you could get the solar panels from a UK company.

put some proper metro lines in places other than London,

like newcastle :D we need the metro badly up here ;)

im all for nationalising our power industry , building a couple of nuclear reactors and giving the nation energy at cost for anyone private or commercial with a yearly bill of under 10k
should be more than doable as nuclear plants only cost around 2-3billion in 2008

I will do the following:
  • Start funding businesses that make pancakes.
  • Invest in Hovis.
  • Equip an army of highly trained monkeys to manage the economy.
  • Make Pepsi or coca cola run through the mains water supply for every household.
  • Bribe Japan to remove the censoring in all adult content - It will make life more awesome.

What are you talking about ?

Research, both for research based solely on scientific merit and for more commercial research. With the latter, take care to ensure that anything patentable is patented - it's silly to have public money doing that kind of research and private companies taking all the profits from it. Any and all profit from commercial applications of the research to go back into more research. With luck, it might be self-sustaining after the initial £75B.

Some people would say that we can't afford to fund research, especially research purely for knowledge, without any consideration of any practical applications.

I say we can't afford to not do so. Research is the future. Research without consideration of practical applications is what uncovers the potential for new practical applications in the future. You can't build a future without knowledge and you can't know what pieces of knowledge may come together in the future to be the foundation for radical, world-changing technology. We need to fund research, including blue skies research. It isn't a frivolous luxury we can't afford. It's a necessity for the future we can't afford to lose.
