Think this might be why my card is over heating..

Was idling on 90c and by the time I got the fresh install done I'd had enough trying to install it knowing the card was shagged, anyway left it for weeks now and only just got round to having a look at it.. suprised it booted first time, told me I was setting up windows for the first time and asked for a name.. then gave me the logon screen with the other account.. heh. By the time I got to the desktop it and HWMonitor installed.. was idling at 85c then crept up to 90c and this is before drivers were installed, installed the drivers and now it crashes all the time very quickly.

Anyway.. two questions:

Anyone know what temperature will fry these cards?

What temperatures from graphics cards will start to damage the board/slot?

I think they shut off when they reach critical temps, like CPUs. IIRC the 480 had that prob during launch. Running it at high temps like 90C constantly will cause the solder balls to decouple eventually. Not sure about damage to the slot.

Looks like an 8660GT ?

Am I missing something here? Was the heatsink OFF the card when it was running?(like in the top pic).

Secondly.. did you clean up the processor and the heatsink and put new paste on before trying it again?

Is the fan working? You could strap a bigger fan temporarily to it to see if that's the problem.

Its a 8600GT.

Sorry I should have clarified, I'm waiting on the wench to return from work with some thermal paste so I can give that a try. AFAIK the fan is working, I was trying to install the graphics drivers and get afterburner working to control the fan (im sure that works with nvidia cards) to 100% speed for the time being. Wouldnt be using it for gaming, just to power the display so I can actually set the server things up!

Just thought it was amusing the paste had all but gone!

It does not need to be covered in loads of paste. It looks fairly okay the amount. It just needs to fill any micro grooves in the cooler to level out the surface.

The paste will get squeezed out the sides, it's only meant to be a thermal contact between the two surfaces of metal. Too much will make it worth. BUT.. possibly the original stuff just got dried out, or maybe the cooler had come loose (looking at that plastic brackets).

Yeah the heat sink was on, I'm fairly sure there is meant to be at least a thin layer there.. its more reflection on the chip than anything and there is such a minor amount on the heatsink its self, I wouldnt be putting much on at all.. only a tiny bit.

I'm hoping its the thermal paste thats the issue tbh

Haha.. I'll be probably putting a arctic rev2 or similar (what evers on offer when I get paid :P) on the cpu and overclocking that but otherwise its just gunna sit as a server for vent or teamspeak and maybe a killingfloor server and other random mess around game servers.
