Spec me a car for the mrs... this thing will hardly get used and when it does it will be local ( she should get a moped! )

around 1k to spend.

Cheap to run, tax, insurance, fuel etc.

Reliable (yeah i know is only a grand)

Solid enough not to fall to bits living on the sea front..

Heres a list, vw polo, toyota yaris etc etc..

tbh i dont understand this co2 tax thing now, not worth getting an oil burner either is it?

suggestions from the ocuk community please!:D

At that end of the market anything with 12 months MOT, usual suspects such as Fiesta, Focus, and although they are truly terribly in every way an Astra makes a decent buy at this price.

Yaris's are very good little cars, i have one myself infact, but dont know what you'd get for a grand...

If it will hardly be used, why focus on the variable costs being low? If its hardly used it doesn't matter how much petrol it uses surely?

Thanks,

was thinking low running for the tax and insurance...

what do you think?

90% of people buying a £1k car want:

a) A small engine
b) A small car
c) 'cheap road tax'

This means demand for grotty crap like ancient Fiestas, Saxo's and Corsas is huge. If it works and it isn't 20 years old you can get a grand all day long for all sorts of junk.

In the meantime, really quite decent cars that are far better and far safer and far nicer to drive are almost worthless because people don't want them.

I'm thinking Ford Mondeos, Honda Accords - etc etc. The tax difference is only about £60-70 a year and if you hardly use it, it doesnt matter how economical it is because you wont spend much on petrol.

What you will get, though, is a much nicer car for the money.

Don't go fishing in the cesspool of the used car market with all the learner drivers and clueless numpties. The sheer quantity of people with no money who know nothing about cars and want to spend under a grand mean even the most crappy of nails sells.

Have to agree with Fox. Get a Mondeo at that budget.

My mum bought one for £500 a few months back and it hasn't missed a beat yet.

Get her a Ford KA, there are loads about for a grand you could actually get a quite decent one for that kind of money that been looked after.

They have the old tappy 1.3 engine but they are reliable & should anything go wrong they cheap as chips to fix usually.

A Ka in decent fettle is great fun to drive but they have serious rot issues and are very old hat and uncivilised.

I'd go down Fox's route - Mondeo, Accord, Vectra, Laguna - something from that class and the more common the better.
