No. I'm just saying mind your own freaking business. Why do you care if other people smoke. You should thank them for paying for your health care.

I don't know if it's the general public opinion or just the geeks of this forum but seems like 3/10 threads here is about attacking smokers lately. It makes you sound like the idiot from work with glasses, overweight that speaks in an annoying nasal voice.

Edit: This isn't an attack on any one, I just wonder why people here care so much what other people do with their lives, it's their health and money and there are a lot worse things they could be doing.
 
Smoking is a dirty habit and only recently have people been forced to smoke away from others. mind my own business? Dont breathe smoke on me. Job done ;)

I may be taking this the wrong way but do you think smokers actually pay for our healthcare, how? Through the tax they pay? If so that is totally absurd. The amount of money that smoking related illnesses drain from the NHS is far higher than what is put in.

Some of the diseases that smoking can contribute to include Cancer, COPD, emphysema and strokes and the amount of money that goes into research, diagnosing and treatment for these diseases is not paid for by smokers.

I have nothing against smokers, do what the hell you like to your body, but please don't tell me that I should be thanking you for paying for my healthcare. You should be thanking every taxpayer for the money they are putting into the system that you will eventually need to treat you.

Hence i would't care if she did indeed or later or have lung or throat cancer. Bad as it may sound, this isn't the 50's anymore and there are enough medical research to confirm the links between smoking and cancer.

Smoke all she likes but don't expect sympathy if it affects her career.
 
I don't think smokers want any symphaty from any one, it's an addiction and they are aware of the harm it does to them. I personally find alcoholism and gambling much more destructive but a lot of people seem to find it very impressive/proud that they can drink 6-10 pints before they feel drunk.

Quite a few pop/rock singers smoke - guess they feel it adds a quality to their voice.

A relative of mine was in the charts doing a cover for someone and the night before her recording the producers told her to go out clubbing and stuff up her voice by shouting and smoking, results were pretty good to be fair.

No way you could keep up a lifetime of singing/performing with the fags.

Great selective quoting, way to mislead anyone reading the thread, very fair. What you missed out was:

made up by:

"According to the think tank, the cost of smoking is made up of the cost of treating smokers on the NHS (£2.7 billion); loss in productivity due to smoking breaks (£2.9 billion); increased absenteeism (£2.9 billion); the cost of cleaning up cigarette butts (£342 million); the cost of smoking-related fires (£507 million); and the loss in economic output from the deaths of smokers and passive smokers (£4.1 billion and £713 million respectively)."

So smokers are not paying for my healthcare at all.

That figure is irrelevant. Your argument was "The amount of money that smoking related illnesses drain from the NHS is far higher than what is put in."

Which your source shows is untrue.

If you want to add up everything how about the billions the treasury saves on premature deaths by smoking?

Someone smokes until his 65, then dies. Treasury wins, they don't have to pay a single penny on pensions for people who worked all their lives.

You know, since we're just "throwing random things" out there.


By the way, drunken idiots cause far more street litter then smokers ever will, you only need to go to town after a Friday or Saturday night to see.

Fair enough, my argument should have not been limited to the NHS and smoking related illness.

But from the quoted articles we can tell that smoking costs the treasury £13.7 billion and that smoking raises only £10billion. There is a shortfall of £3.7 billion. Which has to be met by someone.

smokers always seem to point out how drinking is worse than smoking

its not about comparing one thing to another, the topic is smoking

and i dont think they can ever really prove if tax from smoking is higher or lower than the cost to society as there are so many factors to take in to account

I'm sure if treasury didn't find smoking profit they would have ban it already or raised taxes on it.
