Ok so since harmony wouldnt provide me with a link, I googled the thread topic:

http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?&m=1273264&mpage=1

Funny read, hardly anyone on the evga forum agrees with him either lol.
So he calls people in that forum that criticise his method of testing and absense of link/relation between the results and VRAM usage "attacking him" as well...jeeeesss.

Seriously...how is anyone suppose to have a meaningful discussion with someone that see anyone that disagree with him as enenmy that personal attacking him?

You obviously like the tone he used to question people. Because this is how you questioned me. Seriously, if you want a good discussion, watch your tone.

I still remember that the first time your forum ID drew my attention was that you were insulting my intelligence by slandering that I was confusing vram shortage and CPU bottleneck in WoW. It's exactly the same happening again there.

1) If anyone wanted a good discussion, they wouldnt have one with you. None of your discussions are good.

2) Your intelligence is mostly 'slandered' by the rubbish that you keep on posting. And I really dont get how you can be accusing others of slandering you following all the BS you keep on posting about me being banned from a forum I was never a member of.

On the topic of graphics cards, you come across to me as the least intelligent person I have ever come across that keeps on rambling on and on and on about Vram, misrostutter, SLI / Xfire and whatever else you personally and irrationally dislike, and this is a topic I have been following for over 15 years now.

Making a discussion on this topic, especially in this forum here, is worse than driving in London.

15 years ago, were you using S3 Virge and debating 2MB vram vs 4MB vram? You must be the one who sided with the 2MB version and pwn'ed hard? Sorry I thought that should be 14 years ago?

harmony i think i know what your going on about after reading the OP a few times lol,

and yes you are right if i understand correctly. I cannot run BF3 with ultra textures or shadows because i get stuttering and freezing when i look left and right, i can run forward with minimal freezes though as i'm not swapping that many textures at any real speed (5870 only has 1gb) my fps are pretty much constant except for the freezing and stuttering.

if i drop textures and shadows to high then i can run fine with virtually the same fps as ultra settings but the simple fact is my 1gb 5870 just hasn't got the vram to run ultra textures, i had the same thing happen on crysis 2.

i was going to upgrade to a 2gb card but as i only run 1 monitor at 1080p i didnt see the need to upgrade just so i could run those 2 settings at ultra, should i get eyefinity then 2gb would be minimum i would get. saw my bro's 5850 1gb CF fall over today when he tried bf3 single player today at 5760x1080 yet he gets and average 100fps when playing at 1080p at the same quality settings. 1gb is just not enough vram :(

Thats only because you don't give other people a chance when they raise valid points, you seem to be set in your way and what anyone else says does not matter , therefore there is no point even striking a debate with you !!!!

No, as I said the topic was 'Graphics Cards'. 15 years ago I began reading how they worked.

You cant even read or understand what anyone else says, which clearly shows your lack of intelligence.

Also 15 (maybe 14) years ago I had an ATI 32 Mb Rage Fury graphics card, was insanely slow compared to a 16 Mb Voodoo 3, which I seriously regretted not buying despite only having half the Vram.

Uh oh here we go again

You obviously have missed all those vram war threads. Did they give me a chance before attacking? They used to make some good points, e.g. same core with different vram size; now this time finally they no longer make valid points, at least not yet I've seen.

no dont take that tone with me, i'm curious to know why i get that problem, dont really care about the outcome just the solution but what harmony is saying sounds correct to me, if it's not then someone explain why i get the problems i do?

Because your 5870 is obviously too slow for BF3 on Ultra settings.

Even if you had a 2 Gb 5870, it would still be too slow for BF3 on Ultra settings.

Stop placing the blame on Vram when you actually have a GPU that isnt fast enough.

Then you must be the one who developed the ATI Rage Fury, or you had access to the ES samples which were held for 3-4 years before going into market. Those Rage Fury cards were released in Oct 1999 (12 years ago) I'm afraid.

bhavv is partially right about this. A single 5870 does not have sufficient GPU power to do Ultra 1920x1200, regardless of vram size.

However when you go SLI or CrossfireX, vram would make a difference - if you do 1GB SLI/CrossfireX then you are still more vulnerable to lag spikes; if you do 2GB SLI/CrossfireX then you could expect less lag spikes.

my card is fine, i get an average of 50fps with just texture and shadows set to high and the rest ultra with deffered aa off and motion blur off and thats on a 64 man server playing in the forest which i find is hardest on your card.

when i set textures and shadows to ultra my fps barely change but i get a horrible stuttering and pausing when looking left and right, after the intial pause it's fine again till the next time.

only difference i see is ultra textures being too much for my 1gb vram.

You could try to use the latest MSI Afterburner or GPU-Z to get some readings of vram usage. If the lag spikes start to occur more frequently when the vram usage is approaching 1GB while you turn up the graphics settings such like the textures, then I'd say it's evidence of vram shortage increasing the probability of lag spikes. (Given that you still get around 50-60 fps average.)

right i just restested and afterburner reports 980mb vram used regardless of of high or ultra, stuttering wasn't at all with ultra this time which puzzled me, i then remembered that i used 2x AA before.

all ultra with 2xAA, stutterfest.
all ultra with no AA, fine
all ultra bar textures and shadows with 2xAA, fine.

AA uses more vram does it not?
