having just seen my brothers i want to make/buy my own.

literally all im want to do is run xmbc off it.

i dont know much about htpc's apart from the mobo is micro atx?

budget of around 300-400 quid.

The Mobo's can be mAtx or Itx. obviously Itx is small, takes up less room but there is also less space.
Lian li and antec do some good HTPC cases, though expensive.
I think the AMD Llano chips are great for HTPC. They offer brilliant CPU and GPU perforance while only using about 20W of power. FM1 proves to be a good platform for future HTPC setups too.

As HDD prices are skyhigh aswell, it may be worth getting an SSd for this system, it may taske a lot of your budget up though.

ive got a old 320gb harddrive i intend to use as its main purpose is just a streaming box.

its a 3.5" sata drive.

ive noticed ocuk sell some barebones kits. is that literally just the case and motherboard?

For the price, this spec looks better.

Is there any reason to go for just 2GB RAM (1GBX2). Id say spend the extra £10 and go for atleast 4GB. Both the case you linked are value ones but will still do the job. If you wanted a better looking Case you'd have to go for an antec one and spend an extra £90-£100.

For the 2nd spec, if you upgrade it to an i3 2100(T), and aslo used the otrher case; youd have a great spec.

looking at the build your choosing i guess your after an OS as well as the case + internals

will you be saving all your videos to the hard drive, because 320GB fills up mighty fast when your using a HTPC. 320GB will give you about 50% more space than a sky+ box once youve got all the other programs you need installed

now is a pretty terrible time to be buying HDDs, but there is one way you can get a decent amount of storage space from OcUK. however, you will need to pester the guys in the customer service section to change a couple of bits to get the PC in budget, but they've always been really helpful to me

what i'm suggestion is getting one of these:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Home Server GTi Intel Core i5 2300 2.80GHz DDR3 - Server £439.99
1 x No Operating System £0.00
1 x System 12 Months Standard Warranty £0.00
1 x No Hard Drive Upgrade £0.00
1 x Kingston HyperX Blu 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9AD3B1K2/4G) £23.99
Total : £476.58 (includes shipping : £10.50).

but asking the customer service guys in the forum if the processor can be swapped to one of these:
1 x Intel Pentium G620 2.60GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £52.99

and for windows 7 HP to be included (instead of the OSs that are designed for servers that can come with the prebuilt PC)

if i've done my maths correctly that should come to ~£460, but it will also come with 2x2TB HDDs, which are worth £250 on their own with the hard drive price increase (which hasnt affected prebuilds, hence my strange recommendation)

if hard drive space doesnt really bother you then go for something like this:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Bundle - Home Premium 64 Bit £68.40
1 x Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (WD5000AAKX) £79.99
1 x MSI H67MA-E35 Intel H67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Micro-ATX Motherboard - (Sandybridge) **B3 REVISION** £61.99
1 x Intel Pentium G620 2.60GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £52.99
1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 430W V2 '80 Plus' Power Supply (CMPSU-430CXUKV2) £37.99
1 x Cooler Master Elite 360 Mini Tower Case - Black £28.99
1 x LiteOn IHAS124-19 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM (Version B - with new Firmware) £16.99
1 x Corsair Value 2GB (1x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Low-Voltage Single Channel Module (VS2GB1333D3) £11.99
Total : £374.34 (includes shipping : £12.50).

(the coolermaster elite 360 is almost the same as the OcUK opera inside, but it doesnt come with a rubbish PSU that would need to be chucked anyway)

Or you could just get an Acer Revo 3700 for £200. Save the hassle of building a PC. Plug it in, install XBMC and away you go.

The HDD is big enough to hold 100+ movies and your music collection.

the HDD is 320GB, unless im looking at something else. that doesnt seem that big for a HTPC to me knowing how quickly i fill up the sky HDD

*edit*
found a 500GB one, but thats not amazing for a HTPC

Define amazing?

It's ultra quiet. I cannot hear it when sitting 2 feet away from it. It offloads all the rendering onto the GPU to avoid the need for an expensive processor.

It has gigabit lan installed for streaming 1080P content across a network, which it does wondefully.

It also has optical out for connecting to a home theatre amp, which it also does perfectly.

It runs Windows 7 very well, extremely responsive.

It's tiny, and can be attached to the back of the TV's wall mount points to keep it hidden.

Built in wireless N to stream movies across network and other data

A tonne of USB ports.

Did I mention it's a similar size to the Wii and much lighter.

If you want more storage, get an external HDD and plug it in. This is a lot cheaper than faffing around with silly home builds. It's a lot smaller than you could build yourself, quieter and cheaper.

I've used mine daily for the last year near enough and I have it streaming 1080P content flawlessly. Not to mention it can multi task... HD movie plus web browsing on separate monitor. It has HDMI & VGA out. Supporting dual monitors.

The downside:

It's an Acer... but for less than 200 quid £320 if you add a 1TB NAS drive to the basket to stream all your HD movies. Well that's a pretty good bargain if you ask me.

However... feel free to custom build a server/home PC inside one of those ridiculously large Opera cases that have fake drive bay covers and come with a cheapo PSU. It will be the same size as your telly. I've had one and put it in the bin!

P.S. You cannot compare Sky HD to content on a PC. PC's use many different file formats and containers and treat them very differently to a sky box. 100 movies on a sky box wont be the same size as 100 movies on a PC.

So. To confirm,

You wan to buy.

Buffalo Linkstation Live 1TB NAS Drive £89.99
Acer Aspire Revo R3700 Nettop, Intel Atom Dual Core D525B 1.8GHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, NOOPT, ION 2, HDMI, Linux £199.99

This will give you a perfect home cinema setup. Just install XBMC, connect it via an HDMI cable to your telly.

Store all your movies on NAS drive, either stream across the network to your Revo or connect it directly with a USB cable.

Total price of £289.99

have you got a link for the nettop? do ocuk do them? sounds ideal.

would i be able to stream hd content with it?

do i really need a nas drive? i will not be storing any media just streaming from the internet.

It can stream BBCi HD via XBMC.

If you don't want to store media... sort of defeats the purpose of a HTPC. But it's your choice. You wont need the NAS then. Win win.

It has a 500GB built in if you change your mind.
