Targetted ads-how much info should they use?

Been chatting to my mate and we got on to the subject of targetted ads on the internet and how it technically could be increased to even more accurate (and interesting to you personally) ads, using your recent credit card purchases.

That is, if technology allowed it should companies like google be able to store exactly what you browse and buy - therefore allowing them to put adverts out that they believe will specifically be of interest to you based on your longer-term browsing (and according to their policies 'do nothing else with the data')?

So, I play BF3, Golf, and just bought 'Footballs greatest goals' on DVD down Asda. I get adverts for BF3 downloadable content, some new swish golf clubs and the 'super-sale' of season tickets for my Southampton FC. I don't get adverts for make-up, cruise holidays for the over 50s, and cat food.

Now I think 'BRILLIANT -- ads that I would actually seriously be interested in, sounds marvellous no problemo, in fact please make ads as relevent to me as possible'

My mate suggests 'NOOOOOO -- This is big brother at it's worst. What I browse/buy is my business and my business alone - this information being stored is an absolutely terrible idea'.

I say the more targetted an ad can be on my LONGER TERM lifestyle (so not just the fact I'm currently watching 'the gadget show' or I've just done a search on 'Golf in Surrey' that already happens, this is more about long term info about my habits) -- the better. My mate says 'Feed me the random, mostly irrelevent ads please, thats a WORLD better than those all-so-evil corporations storing how much bogroll I go through a month to see if it's worth trying to sell me 'Andrex', which is Orwellian etc etc!!'

What say you?

No, Moses' post ... he wrote it .. then below suggested what HE wrote was ironic. It wasn't - it was sarcastic.
It was a sarcastic comment about your post, it was *ironic* because it was mocking the lack of interest/depth in your post, but obviously contained little interest/depth itself.

Tbh his post was both, sarcastic about you (britboy) being insightful and ironic because his was also not very insightful and deep.
